I must say, I do still find that my favorite of Darren Shan's series is The Darren Shan Saga, but only one book in it would be a little biased of me to be saying this. This never stays, as I've found - especially considering there are at least ten more of these books to go. This review will cover the whole series however I’ll try to keep any important plot points from later books in spoiler tags.

There was this spoiled kid Grubbs who was always bothering his sister Gret, and was trying to be a rebel smoking against his parents concerns. It's as if the author was deliberately trying to slow the pace of this book, and I can't think of a single reason why he would want to do so. He leads her through his castle and encourages her, showing her torture rooms and the contained victims, whom he tortures with great care and affection. His speech pattern is characterised by a tone of immense sadness, coupled with the use of quite a sophisticated vocabulary; he rarely uses abbreviations, and always addresses characters by their fulls names as opposed to nicknames. While confronting Lord Loss, Dervish is constantly distracted from his chess match as Grubbs is unable to fight off the two familiars.The book repeats the formula of The Saga of Darren Shan and will no doubt be loved by Shan's many fans.
