About this deal

In the end, the characters get on extremely well together and both characters were needed in the process.

Later in life Iwould come into contact with more authors in the genre that portrayed ladies as main characters. The chapters, themselves are quite short which all make this easily readable for its intended age group. And when their eyes meet in the audience of the Drury Lane theatre one night, both girls are sure they’ve seen something suspicious on stage. When something life-threatening happens, Lizzie and Belle quickly realise that there’s something more to this case.

It was a look at history through the eyes of young ladies who were close to my own age and thus grew my love of historical fiction. The beginning was a little confusing with a large number of characters being introduced and then having little role going forward. A key part of the story was the girls finding out about slavery and this was woven well into the story - a child who didn't know much about it would learn lots, while someone who had some understanding of this part of history would see a different side of it.

Overall, I think this book would be best suited to children over 10 years old who aren’t easily upset. The first book in a new thrilling mystery series for 9-12s set in 18th Century London and inspired by real Black British historical figures. I am currently editing my first YA novel which I hope to be able to share with you all in the future. This is an engaging mystery of two girls, Elizabeth Sancho and Dido Belle, which is set in 18th-century London. This is told at pace and the reader is totally caught up in the story, told sometimes in letters, with occasional notes as to where the two are in their deductions. As the Sancho family exited the theatre (without their mother, as she went for their father) , Dido Belle (or just Belle) gave her address to Elizabeth otherwise known as Lizzie. None of the events in the book were expected through my eyes – I was sure they had discovered who did the crime when yet another suspect was introduced! From the descriptions of the Jamaica Coffee House to the candle lit theatre chandeliers Georgian London is vividly brought to life.Williams studied English Literature at Cambridge University before becoming a primary school teacher. The second book in the thrilling middle grade mystery series, perfect for fans of Robin Steven’s Murder Most Unladylike. Elizabeth Sancho’s and Dido Belle’s eyes meet across the crowds at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where Lizzie’s father was about to be the first black man to play Shakespeare’s Othello in a production by David Garrick.
