About this deal

Nevertheless, he wanted to show the story to the directors David Lean and Carol Reed for their impressions, although nothing came of Korda's initial interest. Fleming includes great detail in his descriptions of characters and scenes, with far more realism than the films depict. Bound in black cloth covered hard boards, gilt to spine and gilt emblem to the upper board; in the original Kenneth Lewis designed dust jacket, un-clipped (10s 6d net) which has the jacket designer's credit printed to the front flap 4mm below the blurb. He treats his fellow professionals with respect, even if there is a hint of animosity from Captain Dexter over intelligence agencies getting involved with an FBI case. There is a stereotypical feel to some of the lesser characters – although they may well have been depictions of the times, and Harlem is shown as a stronghold of diverse nationals of different race and origin, mostly no-white, who stand out like a sore thumb when they dare enter this place. Personally, I wouldn’t trust an American who says “chap” to teach me proper slang, but to each his own I guess. This includes the description of Mr Big's death by shark attack, in which Bond watches as "Half of The Big Man's left arm came out of the water. The more complete character profiles in the novel clearly show the strong relationship between Bond and Leiter, and this provides a strengthened motive for Bond to chase Mr Big in revenge for the shark attack on Leiter. Contents and page edges clean, gilt remains very bright (often discoloured), jacket a little browned to rear panel, some light wear to crown and with a neat, historic repair to one small area at upper edge.Big’s beautiful and enigmatic Creole fortune teller, and his old friend Felix Leiter of the CIA, 007 must locate the crime lord’s hideout, sabotage his operation, and reclaim the pirate hoard for England. It’s funny when you reread a book, especially one that you read years (decades ago), even more when it was written in the 1950’s, become part of popular culture and see it with modern eyes. Fleming was trying to present an unflinching look at the real feelings a British agent and 1950s Americans would have had toward black people, while at the same time demonstrating that this state of affairs was certainly temporary.

A very pretty copy of Fleming's second novel, written in just two months at his Goldeneye estate, before the reviews of the first Bond novel, Casino Royale, landed. This dust jacket is the first edition, second state dust jacket and has benefited from very slight restoration to the tip of the spine by an expert paper conservator and presents as a near fine example. All in all, this novel gets some stick, for its racial undertones, and quite rightly so in some places. As Tee-Hee forcefully escorts Bond to the top of a staircase in the warehouse, Bond manages to break free and kicks him down the stairs.

The dust wrapper is in very good or better condition with no Kenneth Lewis blurb to the front flap denoting a correct first state example.Rather than getting upset over it like so many people choose to, I find myself feeling thankful that times have changed and this archaic way of thinking is now much more frowned upon. I don’t remember this being mentioned in Casino Royale, so this could be the first mention of the cover name for Bond’s employers. He notices a black Chevrolet peeling out across the street with a large black man is sitting in the back. This title is one of only a handful of Fleming/ Bond titles signed by Mr Lewis in our presence back in 2005. Big’s extensive network is revealed, in that he has spies all over New York City thanks to his voodoo-backed authority.
