About this deal

A couple from Boston, Steph and her wife, Toni, and newborn son, are spending their family leave here on the peninsula. I really enjoyed how Adrienne Brodeur created strong female characters who were capable, intelligent and independent. Lupo, el pequeño lobo que no es capaz de aullar de manera que de miedo nos enseña como ser raro no es malo y que esa rareza no tiene porqué ser mala.

The cover of Little Monsters depicts a gorgeous seascape with a dulcet sky, ocean blues and young children playing in the golden sand. The bohemian, single Abby is a “graduate of RISD, 1999” and had been “making art on Cape Cod ever since. The fully realized setting of Wellfleet Woods, halfway between the tip and the elbow of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, launches Adrienne Brodeur’s mesmerizing, modern day saga about a dysfunctional family so cleverly drawn as to make the story’s dynamic relatable and completely understandable. Abby plans to keep her surprise pregnancy a secret until her father’s 70th birthday party in August; that’s when she’ll give him a painting revealing the news. Having a baby has changed her concept of “family,” and she wants to explore whether to tell the Gardner family this news. A gentle breeze stirred the budding leaves in the topmost branches of the trees, but the air was still at ground level, the pond water glassy.

In the decades since those early successes, he’d become one of the foremost experts on cetacean biology, studying the population dynamics and communication of humpback whales. I’ve always been obsessed with sibling dynamics and fiction on family dramas, this one really delivers. With a terrific memoir and now a great work of fiction on my bookshelf, Adrienne Brodeur has a fan in me. Adrienne Brodeur (Wild Game) is a master when it comes to writing about family dysfunction and her portrayal of a bi-polar, narcissistic father and his flawed but fully human children is spot-on.I recently read Lessons in Chemistryby Bonnie Garmus, which follows a protagonist who sees the world entirely through scientific terms. Ken was insufferable, Adam was frustrating, Jenny had glimpses of goodness but was inconsistent, David was OK. This monstrously exciting new picture book from bestselling author David Walliams, brilliantly illustrated by Adam Stower is a bright, fun, laugh-out-loud book with a cool message about celebrating individuality.

I had very low expectations going in to Little Monsters, which may have affected my overall impression but… I actually liked it. When I first received an unsolicited copy of Little Monsters to review, my immediate assumption is that it would turn out to be an elevated beach read. Would all their secrets get in the way of executing the “perfect” party for Adam’s seventieth birthday?Best-known for his novels for children including Mr Stink, Billionaire Boy and Awful Auntie, Walliams has also written a number of picture books including The Slightly Annoying Elephant, working with two of Britain’s most talented illustrators, Quentin Blake and Tony Ross. Bonus points if you reference some of the “comps” to which Rachel compares Abby’s art when she visits Arcadia in the beginning of the novel.
