About this deal

I'm sure Drew will never forget the turning point in her treatment that left her speechless: "Drew, have you reached your bottom yet? No one can save Drew her from herself except Drew, and this fourteen year old superstar in the final analysis is frighteningly isolated and on her own. I guess I can relate to this more than a 'oh my, this is a tragic story', I can relate because I have struggled with the same issues Drew has for as long as I can remember. Drew takes us through her journey of self-destruction, drug and alcohol abuse, and her struggle to become sober and understand herself and her issues better. I haven’t read these nor am I much of a film fan, but I do know the feeling – several years ago I read Bob Geldof’s autobiography ‘Is That It?

I read a lot of memoirs but agree, the best ones are from people who have something to say because they’re passionate about something, as opposed to people who feel they ‘should’ publish opinions/ their stories. Prior to that position, he spent 20+ years as a journalist with People and Us Weekly magazines in Los Angeles, including stints as Assistant Managing Editor, West Coast Bureau Chief, and West Coast Editor. I always wondered what the circumstances were that led 9-year-old Drew Barrymore to turn to alcohol and then later drugs. Someone on a blog I read mentioned this book, so I finally got around to picking it up even though it's very old and very out dated. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.Although his input is in narrow paragraphs and a different type style, his constant intrusion is annoying and often appears to be telling the reader what to think. Drew finally had to recognize her life style was no longer a choice she could keep but was approaching a critical life or death decision.

For some reason Jaid Barrymore thought it a good idea to let a 9-year-old, albeit a precocious one, accompany her to clubs and gave her more social freedom than most parents (including mine) allow for teenagers. There was very little responsibility taken by Jaid and the frequent asides that were included by her were distracting, defensive, and inappropriate considering this was supposed to be her daughter's memoir. Drew shows wisdom beyond her years as she invites the reader to look at her relationship with her mother, her non-relationship with her father, and her desent into drink and drugs.Thank you for saving me from having to look at these ever – the stuff from Wildflower is just cringey when it’s even remotely comprehensible! She is a brave woman, who has overcome many obstacles that people should never have to face, but unfortunately do, and she has come out the other side to become an inspiration to people in general, but especially to people who have been through some of what she has experienced. I only recently stumbled upon the knowledge that Drew Barrymore wrote an autobiography over 20 years ago detailing the issues she encountered with drugs and alcohol at a young age.

Her writing is constantly interrupted by by Todd Gold, whose input, in my opinion should be shorter and be in footnotes at the bottom of the page. Drew talks about the support given to her by Steven Spielberg who she says gave her the best advice she ever been given on acting : "Drew, you can't act your character, you gotta be your character. update: I re-read this immediately after reading Wildflower, and found it interesting to compare the two versions of some items that came up in both books - and also how Drew characterized her time in the hospital in Wildflower.

I wasn't sure if I would like this book since it was written so long ago and by someone so young, but it stands the test of time. I snapped up this book as soon as it came out in paperback and have read and re-read it more times than I can count. She went through many difficult times with her abusive father, and had a lot of issues with her mother who didn't know how to be a parent and therefore let Drew down in a big way. Read this as a teen and I should have taken it as a cautionary tale and learned and not repeated her mistakes.
