About this deal

Distilled five times for "exceptional purity", the gin is made using carefully selected botanicals including orange peel, coriander, angelica, lime, cassia and nutmeg to create a "fresh, vibrant spirit" that is "bursting with plenty of orange citrus notes". This replica gin was based on the original 1689 recipe of the spirit made by the Dutch King William III (AKA William of Orange) after he was proclaimed King of England, Ireland and Scotland that very year. Despite the battle taking place more than three centuries ago, it is still frequently mentioned in sectarian songs and chants. Founder Alexander Janssens studied the archives of the British Library to retrieve the original recipe.

Fortuitously, the new act also helped English farmers who by selling surplus grain to the distillers were able to pay higher rents to the landowners, who dominated both houses of Parliament and whose support the king needed for his war. also appeared without a percentage sign – the panel said this “framed the number as a historical date reference in the context of King William of Orange”. Never ones to be short changed, sailors would light a small amount of gin-soaked gunpowder, therefore obtaining ‘proof’ their ration had not been watered down by a scrimping Navy. Nil by Mouth explained: “In the context of Glasgow, the city topped the table for number of religiously aggravated arrests every year, in many of which alcohol played a part, and that issues with religious prejudice since the reformation were indisputable. In the event of any safety concerns or for any other information about a product please carefully read any instructions provided on the label or packaging and contact the manufacturer.

The spokesman said the situation had "nothing to do with King William's associations or anything like that". Dutch-born protestant leader William of Orange became king of Scotland, England and Ireland in the late 17th century after overthrowing catholic monarch James VII. Originally De Kuyper was a manufacturer of 'kuipen'; wooden barrels for transporting jenever and beer. In 1702, William III was succeeded by Queen Anne who earned the nickname 'Brandy Nan' due to her penchant for drinking brandy mixed with cold tea dispensed from an apparently innocent tea pot. This boosted British distilling and helped raise much needed capital to help fund the frequent and bloody wars he was so fond of fighting.Like Dutch jenever, English gin went through two stages of production (and in most cased still does). Passed in 1690, it heralded a gin revolution and the start of craft gin distilling that we know today.
