Conversely, positive feelings can encourage relaxation, which reduces tension, which reduces pain, which reduces fear. To the author; If you are writing a book about practical methods, then I would stick to that, rathering than enforcing some potentially damaging opinions. I’m in my first pregnancy and as I’m sure everyone has experienced, there’s a wee bit of anxiety about labour and birth.

Her practical advice will be sure to give you enough tools to enable you to feel calm and collected throughout labour - Natasha Harding, Sun --This text refers to the paperback edition. As well, good information about the many posibilities/options that a future mother has when it comes to give birth. However, it was a bit too ‘zen’ for my liking, and not portraying a good light on all medical staff that have years of experience and know what they’re doing. I feel like that's just setting expectant mothers up with unrealistic expectations that leave them unprepared for the reality of childbirth. Really enjoyed the techniques and positivity around labor that I think will be super helpful when the time comes! Being relaxed is the key, so you will learn how to quickly and easily access a state of deep relaxation using a combination of breathing techniques, visualisations, guided relaxation exercises, light touch massage, positive affirmations and various other techniques.

After reading this book I was actually really looking forward to giving birth and felt almost excited and not nervous at all at the prospect. A journey that no doubt will test you at points, but one that will also give you the highest of highs as you experience more love and joy than you ever thought possible. And like I said- even if you are planning an epidural or ceasarian or ANY type of birth, this book is just amazing and reminds us the power of our thoughts and that it should be YOUR decision. It's not dogmatic about birth needing to be 'natural', and the author says to be ready for changes to the plan, and that a C-section is just as positive as a vaginal birth if it feels positive.

That negative feeling can make a difficult birth more likely, causing a vicious cycle of tension that increases pain, that increases fear, that increases tension, etc. I just can't recommend this book enough and hope it helps others to have a more calm and positive birth experience. I certainly didn’t opt for a pool birth with no pain killers for my second labour as I knew what labour is like - and knew that wasn’t going to work for me. People can get as crunchy as they want, myself having packed an essential oil to bring to the hospital, but no amount of woowoo affirmations is going to give a newborn baby the Hepatitis B vaccine. Just as I would telling them to speak to my other half and not talk to me, who would surely just pass on what they're asking or saying anyway?Oh and if you don't know what hypnobirthing is, it is a type of hypnotherapy/pawlow dog effect where you work on conditioning your brain to associate x or y with positive things. In this book, Siobhan debunks common myths about hypnobirthing and explains why she believes it can make every type of birth a better experience – from a water birth at home to an unplanned caesarean in theatre. I feel like this book was one of the main things that helped diminish my fears surrounding labour and birth, and I ended up having a beautiful experience. Through her teaching she seeks to educate and empower women – and their birth partners – so that they can enjoy amazing and positive birth experiences, however they choose to bring their babies into the world. In the second chapter, Siobhan Miller begins to share the toolkit that includes: two breathing techniques, visualizations, light-touch massage, guided relaxations, positive affirmations, and the art of creating shortcuts to achieve relaxation.

Despite a 15 hour labour, I would describe my experience as positive thanks to my mindset throughout, which I definitely wouldn't have had without this book. Hypnobirthing teaches you how your body works on a muscular and hormonal level when in labour, and how to work with your body to make birth more efficient and comfortable. It has completely changes my perspective about labour and made me feel relax, empowered and confident. Remember, the mechanics of how your baby enters the world matter little long-term in comparison to how you felt when your baby came into the world. It gives you techniques to implement hypnobirthing no matter what birth journey you have, things to consider to optimize your experience, and how your partner can support you! When I was in labor, I thought upon SO MUCH that I learned from this book, the main take away being that I have one job, no matter what kind of birth I ended up having: to remain calm.
