About this deal

The next few hours involve Garrett being treated as a guest, while he waits for the submarine to arrive. When Melnicker notices two individuals enter the hall he is distracted and excuses himself for the lunch break. Garrett starts to walk down the road and comes across a policeman on a bicycle who goes back to the cliff with him. Marek has "sold" Garrett to the Russians for his knowledge and has arranged for a submarine to come before dawn to take him away. Ian Carmichael was apparently disappointed with the production of this vehicle that neither knows not cares what it is meant to be.

There are some good shots at Watford Junction in this thriller, taken on the now disused former platform 12. Unknown to them, Garrett has rigged the alarm on his wristwatch to cause the boat to explode, killing the three henchmen. Directed by the BAFTA-nominated Cy Endfield, whose credits include Zulu and Hell Drivers, Hide and Seek also stars Oscar winner Hugh Griffith, Bond villain Curd Jürgens and Golden Globe-winning British actress Janet Munro; the film is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. They find the life jackets have been attached to trousers, and that Garrett and Maggie faked the attempt for the island. When they approach the car they find the driver is Richter, who forces them into the car at gunpoint and they drive towards an isolated cliff top.Ian Carmichael has the performance of his career playing the nigh wrong man-esque physics professor out on a flimsy spy plot.

The Russian is working with shady businessman Marek and they plan to kidnap the professor and make it look as though he has defected to the Soviet Union.Starting in sixties London, Carmichael has some encounters which seem random with strange characters. It doesn't always make sense and the tone varies but the story and cast are pleasing enough to carry the film along. Garrett arrives at the Ministry of Defence for a meeting, and while in the bathroom a box of chess pieces is dropped off to him that his driver believes he mistakenly left in the car. The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote: "A sort of poor man's James Bond exercise, feebly directed in sub- Hitchcock manner.
