About this deal

It's hard to believe that Neil Woods actually experienced all the situations he discusses - you imagine for it to be falling straight out of a gangster movie scene, or for Leonardo DeCaprio to walk in like i'm watching THE DEPARTED. His story unveils the victims of the 'Drug War' in the form of the down and out drug users who are at the bottom of the hierarchy. Starting out in the early 90s and making the rules up as he went, Neil was at the forefront of police surveillance. As proper a copper as the guy from "Blue on Blue: An Insider's Story on Good Cops Catching Bad Cops" - -but without the Polly-Anna blindness to reality.

Addicts and users also risk becoming criminalised instead of getting the help and support they need to lead useful and productive lives. This book started off with great promise, getting to read about Neil’s life going from standard cop to undercover and all that entails. As an outpatient psychologist in the US, I fight the "war" in a different way and it was very informative to see the story from a detective's perspective. All in all, it got me thinking that law enforcement and mental health providers should work more closely to protect the vulnerable and weaken the power of the drug gangsters. The scary part is the two parallel worlds that he portrays and how on going to a town he managed to pick out the people to contact and within a couple of introductions he was face to face with some of the most dangerous people at loose in the country. His experience and life as an undercover police officer really is gripping and chilling at the same time.

It's a superb book, which has given me more insight into the UK's 'War on Drugs' than anything else I've seen or read. Once drugs are decriminalized everything can change for the better, especially if help is offered in place of persecution.

After the dealers have been followed for some time, there will be a major bust by the police, with often large number of people arrested and brought to trial. This book is not just about drugs; it is also about lives, the lives of those who are, one way or another, involved in this hideous drama. He does love himself though and his ego I guess is the thing that kept him alive through his experiences. I would say it is impossible to have a healthy relationship with anyone keeping that level of secrecy, I felt sorry for Sam and his children.

You end up sympathising more with the users (who end up in prison) and disliking the drug squads, who only care about increasing the number of convictions and not helping people.
