About this deal

This is the only vinegar that everyone agrees is strictly off-limits on the gluten-free diet—it's made from barley-based ale that's not distilled, so it definitely contains gluten. However, it has around 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten or less, which is generally considered to be suitable for people who are gluten intolerant or suffer from celiac disease.

Manufacturers do not need to disclose the presence of wheat (one of the top allergens) as a starting ingredient in distilled white vinegar because distillation is considered to break down and remove all the allergenic proteins. The problem is, you can’t tell how much barley malt extract has been used in a product just by looking at the packaging, unless it has been labelled gluten free, or if you contact the manufacturer and they confirm the product has been tested and contains no more than 20 ppm of gluten. At Frings we don’t have this info, because quite frankly malt vinegar is rarely made on our Acetators.

But those who say they react to gluten grain-based vinegar are not imagining their reactions, either. Chutney – Malt vinegar adds complexity and depth of flavour to fruit chutneys, including peach, apple, and onion chutney. Here at Coeliac UK, we often receive the question, “if the ingredients lists gluten, how can it be suitable for a gluten free diet?White vinegar is the controversial one, as it can be made from almost any starch source or combination of sources, including gluten grains. Glazes, marinades and brines – Use malt vinegar for brining meat, making marinades and glazing roasts to add a sweeter, nutty flavour. In fact, Coeliac UK listed malt vinegar as gluten free until 2020, which conflicted with the official stance in the US.
