About this deal

I loved the concept of the book pharmacy - so much so that I am trying to figure out if there might be a way of putting into practice something similar in our local library! I rarely get emotional reading but this book is so beautifully poignant and touching, speaking if a time when the world stopped, how we all feared how it would end and did the best we could for ourselves and those we love, a gentle hug of a story. I come from Whitby and know York very well and there were countless mistakes regarding both places which really annoyed me and prevented me believing that’s where they were supposed to be. As a book lover, nothing makes me happier than reading about people discovering books and finding joy and solace within the pages of books. It’s the state of mind and heart of the person reading it that will make the book grow into something greater than the words printed in it.

It was heartbreaking to hear their stories, especially as I was pretty sure they would be based on true accounts. Het voelde enorm warm aan om te lezen over de boekenwinkel, en de vreugde die een boek teweeg kan brengen bij mensen. The most prominent of these being the story of Rosemary and George’s enduring relationship, told through a series of flashbacks throughout the book. And I think there is still a lot of guilt around that, and a feeling that I should be grateful, rather than be able to mourn and grieve the difficulties I did face. While I've read thousands and have a sizeable home library, few books have ever begged me to read them again.

But, these lockdowns were so different to the way my own country, New Zealand, experienced lockdowns that they didn't even seem like lockdowns. Overall this is an intelligent, refreshing and heart warming book that I adored, and would recommend to everyone who reads - so that's all of you!I have just finished it, I struggled to start with which I think was due to the formatting on my arc from netgalley. But the Kindle edition was available for just 99p, and we were just a few days away from flying to the UK. Yes, this novel is set during the first few months of the Covid pandemic, but don't let that stop you from reading it, especially if you enjoyed the first in the series as much as I did.

Fell in love with the characters and their stories that happened in a time that I turned to books as well. Some of these books I own, and want to read even more now; some I have read and enjoyed the small summery to remind me why I loved them and some that I haven't read, but have now been added to my TBR. So I made the purchase, and then read over half the book on the flight, finishing it a few days later.I will say that I really enjoyed the characters, both major and minor, they were well rounded and had great little stories all of their own. This is a wonderful idea for a novel and the creation of a book pharmacy during the Covid pandemic works so well to introduce so many different characters, each with their stories and needs. Beautifully written and thought provoking, it has reminded me of books I had forgotten about but will certainly read again plus some that I am unfamiliar with but will look out for. I'd recommend this book to book lovers as it contains lots of book recommendations within it and I've written quite a few down. Set during the dark days of Covid shutdowns and isolation, this chronicles how a myriad of ordinary people struggled through all of the challenges.
