Pelz gives clear cut instructions on how to integrate fasting into a woman’s life, and in conjunction with her cycles. Similar to the first power phase, focus on nurturing the body through nutrient dense whole foods and exercise.I am pursuing a PhD focusing on nutrition and chronic pain, and couldn't even get through the first 30 pages without wanting to throw the whole book away. The nutrition and integrative health fields are increasingly recognizing the power of short- and long-term fasting in protocols for health and disease. I’m a recovering cancer patient and confident the information in this book has added many healthy good years to my life. A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce. It’s like Dr Mindy is literally speaking directly to my situation and providing practical steps on how to overcome health and weightloss challenges with fasting.

I read it slowly, taking 15 pages of notes, to increase my comprehension and to use as a reference throughout the month as I complete a 30 Day Reset. About half way through this book the author started talking about using weekly coffee enemas, sleeping with castor oil packs over your liver, red light therapy and having your breast implants removed - if fasting wasn’t working for you. In Fast Like a Girl , Dr Mindy Pelz does a masterful job of outlining why women should practice fasting differently than men. And particularly because she makes fasting doable for women, 50% of the population for whom the current fasting paradigm really does not work. Her popular YouTube channel regularly updates followers on the latest science-backed tools and techniques to help them reset their health.

So there’s a whole third section with application of the formula for wherever you’re hormonal, whatever your hormonal situation is. Also the plan for fasting during your period is based on 28 days, so for me with a 42ish day cycle this is worthless. Fasting is a metabolic switch from burning glucose to burning fat (ketosis) that gives us a host of benefits such as cellular healing (autophagy), fat/weight loss, immune system repair, improved stomach microbiome, and more. For me, it felt like one of those magical moments in life when you recognise we are in the midst of really good change – a point in time that marks a shift towards us better honouring women’s cycles and respecting women’s bodies.
