I'm not sure about that because it wasn't quite original enough, but the game is extremely well-polished and did some great things like make a 2d game feel 3d and alive. I didn't play the older games but i think players who enjoy the older games are just vastly different in what they expect out from a donkey kong game, and a lot of it just comes down to what they played as a child or before the other.
