They get better with each book and we get to see more and more characters that add a lot to the story – old people, a rich guy, questionable characters, all together shady characters, a fun as hell cleaner/maid, and so much more!And with attention elsewhere, only a local vet is paying attention to a worrying spate of canine poisonings happening throughout the village. This works as a stand-alone but I think familiarity with past events would have added to my enjoyment. Set in Calcutta in 1919, this offers a fascinating historical backdrop for the protagonists, Captain Wyndham and Sergeant Banerjee.
