The story of Monique coming into herself, and realizing some situation that she was in was a little more toxic than she had initially noticed it was something that was very enjoyable for me to read. There are kids who are ace and aro who may not even want that in the first place, so it was kind of weird to read a book about an inability to have sex that didn't even bring up the fact that there are non-religious people who simply don't want or need sex. However, because they’re in love and will eventually get married, Monique figures there’s no need to wait. This is also the first YA book I've read that tackles "vagina problems" in the first place, so it makes me especially sad that I didn't like it more. This plot revolving around religion, sex, and the way they often interact and clash was handled with such care and nuance and honestly, and as a church girl born and raised, I appreciate how Goffney chose to explore these topics. I quite literally just finished reading this maybe five minutes ago so this is me rambling, but wow, what a lovely book! I loved the writing an thought that Goffney really captures the Black Baptist church in all it's glory, warts and all. So, Monique resolves to “come up with some solutions” to get him back, beginning with booking an appointment to see if her lady parts are normal.

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources and Hot Key Books for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily. Monique's] journey toward recognizing her own value is hard-won, and her awareness of her own worth, when it comes, feels like a true victory. Perhaps some parents don't deserve to forgiven, but the reality for many folks is encouraging family to shed toxic views and accepting their limitations. I loved Sasha as a character and it surprises me every time how Goffney can create such beautiful, loving and supportive side characters that are instrumental to the protagonist finding themselves.

The adults around Mateo offer support to him and his 7-year-old sister, Sophie, however, he knows he is now responsible for caring for her and the bodega as well as trying to survive junior year—that is, if he wants to fulfill his dream to enter the drama program at the Tisch School of the Arts and become an actor. The second novel about a preacher's daughter in small-town Texas and her journey toward loving herself and her body. My spouse had similarly limited knowledge and we didn't have friends we could really ask, so we kind of had to figure it out on our own. Thanks to Goffney’s superb storytelling and dazzling prose, this candid exploration of a sensitive subject is also a heartfelt, funny, and irresistible read.

I honestly loved both Sasha and Reggie-who were two of Monique’s biggest supporters throughout and I’m soo glad she had them both, cheering her up and being there to confide in when she needed it the most. This was a book about a young girl finding herself and taking ownership of her body, and the power that came alongside it allowed her to be free. Her journey toward recognizing her own value is hard-won, and her awareness of her own worth, when it comes, feels like a true victory. At the start you're like "oh no, they're those types of parents" but as the book goes on you see that they're also not who they seem. I loved the trios unlikely Friendship and how they supported each other, but I really liked Reggie's Character he stole my heart!Tired of waiting, her boyfriend breaks up with her, spurring Monique to discover she has a medical condition that makes her far from perfect and she concocts a plan to fix her body and win him back. Reeling from the breakup, Monique learns she has vaginismus—her vaginal muscles contract involuntarily, preventing penetration. The goods do not need to be in their original packaging however in a sellable condition, and at your own cost and risk. That sounds excellent and important, and I’m also pleased that the religious aspect is handled respectfully and carefully – I found this to be true with Yinka, Where is your Huzband, recently, and it’s refreshing to not have the religious folk be one-sided bad guys.
