About this deal

With Lesley Pearse's reputation for grippy, gritting stories that never shy away from the seamier side of life, I was expecting distressing themes from Betrayal. With her father in the Royal Marines, Lesley and her older brother spent three years in grim orphanages before her father remarried - a veritable dragon of an ex army nurse - and Lesley and her older brother were brought home again, to be joined by two other children who were later adopted by her father and stepmother, and a continuing stream of foster children. A bestselling British novelist, Lesley Pearse’s novels have sold more than ten million copies worldwide. She couldn’t have been better named as she represents a universality of experience that women have had since the first woman herself.

It was an extraordinary childhood and in all her books, Lesley has skilfully married the pain and unhappiness of her early experiences with a unique gift for storytelling.Beautifully written from start to finish and never one to shy away from uneasy topics, Betrayal covers some difficult subjects with this author's trademark skill of empathy, sensitivity and cracking good story telling. But then the last quarter or so of the book, things really picked up and god did the book veer off in a direction that I hadn’t seen coming but really looking back on it the clues were there for the reader to see if they had looked hard enough. But Don's abusive behaviour got worse with each day and when he started taking his anger out on her infront of the kids, and then on her kids, she knew that it was finally time to get them out. She has also worked as a nanny and a Playboy bunny, and designed and made clothes to sell to boutiques. It shows how insidiously the coercive control has co-opted Eve's sense of self and her world view, she would stay for the sake of shame and social propriety than leave.

I always find time to start reading as soon as a book is in my hands (something my husband realises each year when I show him her latest book)! We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Lesley has a reputation for writing gritty, confronting stories that don’t shy away from distressing issues. It is a neat device as what she made could be an allegory for hiding the things which happen behind closed doors, or could be used to frame a beautiful view. A true storyteller and a master of gripping storylines that keep the reader hooked from beginning to end, Pearse introduces you to characters that it is impossible not to care about or forget.
