About this deal

But the new Covid section at the end, with its unexpected pivot to drama and crisis, works well enough. Stuffed to the brim with national treasures and tugging on the heartstrings with generous heaps of pathos and melodrama, much of the runtime is spent playing things sweetly and safely, but doing so well. An exhausted, enraged Valentine leaves the hospital and breaks the fourth wall with an impassioned monologue in defence of the NHS. A trailer has debuted for the feature adaptation of Alan Bennett’s play Allelujah which will come to cinema screens in March of 2023.

Somewhere in the middle, something most accurately described as an unholy cross between an Age UK advert and The Good Nurse takes place. However, in the closing parts of the final act, a sudden jarring plot twist completely obliterates the established tone.ALLELUJAH is a British drama following the staff and patients at a hospital for the elderly in Yorkshire. Featuring a powerhouse cast led by Jennifer Saunders and newcomer Bally Gill, supported by Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, David Bradley, Russell Tovey and Julia McKenzie, ALLELUJAH is a warm, humorous, and deeply moving story about surviving old age.

Further, the film is constantly compromised by its attempts to barb its bouquets of community cutesiness with polemical punches. It has a lot of things it wants to say, but its commitment to a shock-value plot twist blunts its ability to say those things and causes it to largely squander its runtime, making for an experience that feels inconsistent and compromised, despite its best efforts. Eyre’s all-star cast may shine in Allelujah, but even Dame Judi Dench can’t save a film whose third act so spectacularly nosedives into “Batshit-Craziest Story Choices Ever Put On Film Hall Of Fame” territory. In an epilogue, Valentine is shown working in an intensive care unit at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, where he encounters Ambrose, one of the Beth's former residents, who dies holding his hand.
