About this deal

In 2022, I published a detailed review of the Gardena Starcut 410 Plus pruner on our blog, check out that review and the photos here. I’ve seen competing products that weigh double and even triple this and I can only imagine how much arm ache the user would experience! I would highly recommend it if you have tall, but still young enough, trees to cut or keep in shape. I consider this to be an “old school” type pruner, by that, I mean it has an external rope, a basic non-gearing mechanism and a saw attachment. Manufacturers often overstate how high you can safely prune branches and while I’m 6ft2 and with a long reach, I was unable to reach any of the stated heights, even when I was standing on my toes!

The shaft is made of lightweight, weather-resistant aluminium with an ergonomic SoftGrip™ handle for comfort, control and a non-slip hold. A few years ago I made a pruning saw up out of four alloy poles that pushed together with a blade attached. This suits my requirements perfectly, and although somewhat more expensive than other makes it is well made and cuts branches very easily. I did a great job of sawing through thick branches, but the secondary blade didn’t cut through the branches easily as the device doesn’t have a gearing system, which means it relies on brute force. It’s worth noting that powered tools like this will never reach as high as my best pick, the Gardena Telescopic Pruner, for one reason – the weight of the cutting mechanism. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The pruner also includes an orange cutting support for added visibility, enhancing your accuracy and safety while working.

Batteries have improved so much over the last decade that they’re now powerful enough to cut through branches up to 200mm (8″), and they can last for well over 50 cuts of thick timber and over 100 branches of various thicknesses. It leaves as clean, and as a crisp, a cut as a manual saw but it takes a fraction of the time and effort -and also extends to over 5 metres! The gearing ratio is 12x, meaning only slight effort is enough to cut through tough stems up to 32mm (1.This pruner is designed to provide an extended reach for cutting fresh wood up to 32mm in diameter, making it an ideal tool for maintaining tree crowns and dense bushes. If you have trees, bushes or tall shrubs in your garden you’ll know that pruning the branches back and keeping them in check can be a pain. Some tools have a saw attached or allow the user to replace the head with a saw for cutting through thicker branches, but this tool doesn’t. We have added the hedge trimming head now too, might get the brush cutter when or if the current one dies.

The product is great, does what its supposed to and is a marginal improvement over its previous iteration the UP86 ( wrecked mine) however the service was poor and it took over a week to arrive.

The battery-powered Greenworks pruner was highlighted based on its specifications and online reviews. High-quality steel blades have friction-reducing PTFE coating that lasts longer, even under heavy use. The irritating problem of regular entanglement and associated wrestling and wrenching of the rope that many extending pruners employ is bypassed (oops, pun) by the clever internal webbing strap and bike chain (didn't expect to see that!
