Black level is deep and strong with good shadow detail and adds a good deal of frame depth; the day of night shooting (even with its specially rigged system) look a tad flat, as is their wont, though there is no detail loss. The film is weird; I didn't really know where he was going for much of the time but he kinda pulls it together in the final act. Director Jordan Peele serves up another dose of horror in Nope, this time putting the focus on a brother-sister duo who must contend with an extraterrestrial foe.

So we were delighted to discover that the pair had made another foray into horror, this time in the Sci-Fi field. It is a regular filming location for movies and commercials, with scenic rolling hills, covered in short amber grass and thorn scrub. Along with a former child star turned family theme park ringmaster (Steven Yeun) who neighbours the siblings, the pair's efforts to chase the spectacle soon bring terrifying consequences and unimaginable horror. Indeed, the whole is shot through with allegory and subtext, some obvious, others not so much, though the defining feature is that of spectacle.

Blame the director for this totally unenthusiastic unexpressed and probably the worst movie last 2 years. Despite this, there is something of an adventurous quality present in the story that keeps it engaging - this is helped in no small part by Michael Abels' score, which is rousing and emotional at key moments. In the end, Nope, is somewhat unsatisfying, there is a lot going on, and a lot to see and feel, but becoming involved with the characters and their plight is difficult when Peele seems to be actively discouraging it, while he channels his inner ‘M. You do have to admire the audacity given to insignificant objects as well, the shoe, for example, whose actions were distraction, to be given such prominence is a delicious irony!
