Narwhal loves Halloween — it’s a great excuse to dress up in a spooky and silly costume, like a ghost, a mermaid, a banana or maybe even Marlow the Mustachioed Moose. but I can't see how the gimmick can be sustained for any length of time; waffle jokes are only going to work for so long. Bantering dialogue entertains throughout, but the book’s best moment might belong to the third story, when Narwhal lends Jelly his “favourite book in the whole wide water, which is blank…“.I had recently gotten the book POLAR OBSESSION by Paul Nicklen which has some really striking and captivating photos of narwhals. I had been drawing oodles of narwhals and jellyfish, but I had the strange habit of putting the fins of the narwhal low down on the narwhal’s body. Also, by the time I finished drawing the book, which is twice the size of a typical picture book, I found I had become more confident as I went along and ended up needing to redraw a third of the book so that it would match up. Jelly also takes over the “Super Waffle and Strawberry Sidekick” comic providing a sidekick’s-eye-view of defeating the dreaded dEVILed egg!I know how popular this series is but it's taken me forever to put forward the effort to actually pick up the book and it did not disappoint.
