About this deal

The story features cute big nosed blonde young Sattouf, his mother, and principally his crazy racist academic father. After having followed her husband to Libya and then to Syria, Riad’s mother can’t take any more of village life in Ter Maaleh. Both women have since won the Grand Prix, after changes were made to how the Grand Prix was awarded. We see her through her young son's eyes, so this attitude comes through in small details (her hunched posture and bagged eyes are sometimes labelled to draw our attention to them), and occasional huge outbursts at her seemingly oblivious husband. This is the first part of Riad Sattouf’s childhood memoirs, The Arab of the Future, and it is superb!

Dans le premier tome (1978-1984) le petit Riad était balloté entre la Libye, la Bretagne et la Syrie. Riad befriends Wael and Mohammad, two other cousins who teach him Syrian Arabic; they try to protect him from the two bullies, who are their uncles though around the same age. Clémentine is desperate to recover Fadi, but the French authorities are unable to help her because she is still married. It was released on 10 June 2009 with great success in France and 1 million viewers in just 2 months.

Barely passing in several classes, Sattouf was plagued with a scourge of social, familial, and all-too-real headaches. The Arab of the Future has received widespread critical acclaim and is considered an instant classic among graphic memoirs. In 2005 he published Retour au collège, an observational study of adolescents in a Parisian middle school, which was a big success. An interesting story, in which the confrontation of different cultures seems to be the central theme.Sattouf speaks from the perspective of his two to six year old self, telling the story of his childhood in France, Libya, and Syria, and shifts color schemes as he moves from country to country. J'ai particulièrement aimé ce tome, le passage de la fin de l'adolescence à l'âge adulte, et tout le travail pour faire le point sur toute l'enfance.
