About this deal

Lexi is the other half of famous Irish podcast duo “My Hot Friend”, with her childhood pal Amanda, who regularly gets them cancelled online for the offensive remarks she makes on the pod. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. My thanks, then as now, to the inestimable Garo Nahoulakhian for wigging out on guitar at the end of the song like his very life depended upon it… and the ever-mighty 🥁 sticks-work of Mike Monaghan, who knew how to unleash the controlled madness that our Satanic overlords would surely insist upon. Her father is unwell, her brother has little respect for what she does and she is beginning to feel like she is on a fast-moving hamster wheel that is spinning out of control. I flew through it in two days, loved the storyline and characters and will definitely pick up another Sophie White book!

And obviously no one tells you how to make friends in your 30s lol it’s difficult and I think Sophie has done a great job writing about this. It takes in so much more than I am describing here but manages to seamlessly weave everything together. Her oldest friend is getting married, with the group chat on WhatsApp very much focused on the wedding.I just felt that the situations they were in at the beginning felt very contrived and it felt very predictable where the various storylines were headed. Early on in lockdown, I was struck by an article I read about the Spanish Flu in early 20th century fiction — namely, that it was notably absent.

I am truly a massive Sophie White fan now, I can't wait to read her other works and see what comes next! I’m a first time mother myself and have been so disappointed with some of my friendships since entering this new phase so was probably looking for something I could relate to. At which point this book is elevated from a funny and a relatable read to a much more important read as we learn more about Claire and witness her mental health degenerating. This book had everything in it that I love; good and bad friendships, falling in and out of love and dealing with the everyday stresses of life and families. Throw in some razor-sharp commentary on influencing, the world of work, and mental health, and the result is a sparky, funny, clever and at times heart-wrenching book that I struggled to put down. She has had a past trauma that she wants to leave right there in the past but she is finding it difficult to remain balanced. If Where I End was a horror story about being bound by the blood knot of family, My Hot Friend is more like a rom-com - a buddy-com? This is not the kind of book I would normally pick up, but after how wowed I was by Where I End I was excited to read more of White's work.

There are lulls in the story, and frank discussions of mental health, but there are still moments that had me laughing out (Joanne especially) and ones that had me reflecting on my own friendships. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. Paranoid that a side conversation is happening without her, Claire becomes slightly obsessed with making her voice heard again.

Joanne’s friends and partner don’t understand how hard it is being a new mum; both expect her to snap back into her old way of life and be up for going ‘out out’ on a whim.
