About this deal

I usually place a piece of card against the roll of film to hold it tight and using this has cut down on the number of fat rolls.

I own two Holgas so the second one may not be exactly the same but I haven’t noticed it in the images. This is due to my lab that processes the film taking several weeks as per their expected turnaround time. That seems like a lot of negativity, but it’s important to be aware of how shooting your Holga can go wrong. The Holga 120N Camera comes with a strap, a lens cap, and an internal film mask so that you can choose to shoot twelve 6x6cm images or sixteen 4.Let’s dive into the art and the freedom of working with restrictions, an ode to analog, of rendering feelings more deeply in celluloid rather than on CMOS sensors; of surrendering to the serendipity of a toy film camera that has limited functionality. From the base model with the traditional plastic lens, to the premium 'in-built flash' and glass lens, and also the pinhole variety! Due to a manufacturing oversight, this switch has no effect on pre-2009 production cameras, and the actual aperture is around f/13, giving the Holga just one aperture. Learn from my mistake and make sure you check that sucker every time you take your camera out, or you’ll end up with half a roll of blurry, over-exposed shots like I did.

This twin lens reflex style camera aims to give you classic medium-format squares with the distinct Holga style – light leaks, vignettes and that old-school feel. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.First thing you might notice if you’re particularly eagle-eyed: this camera is held together with tape. In that review you can see how much fun a toy camera can be albeit one that does produce more “standard” looking photographs. That apparent contradiction comes from the fact that its features are so basic that it takes more of an understanding of how a camera works to make good photographs than it does with a camera you can use on auto mode. However, as of July 2017, Freestyle reported that the moulds had been tracked down, put back into production, and the Holgas were to be available once again.

The Holga's aperture switch can be modified as needed to provide a larger ('cloudy') or smaller ('sunny') aperture. And finally, be aware those metal latches that you slide down to remove the back aren’t the most reliable things in the world. Like the 35mm Holga it has two shutter and aperture settings and uses standard 35mm film and processing.

The unpredictable light leaks along with the softness and vignettes in the corners became desired rather than shunned, and the signature retro, surreal, and dreamlike Holga look they produce has endured ever since. Like its older sibling, it’s got an all-plastic lens, two shutter settings, and two aperture settings. If you want to get more precise than the Holga is probably designed to do, you can set the focus ring anywhere in between these icons. The Holga was originally manufactured in Hung Hom, Hong Kong but later in 1990 moved production to mainland China in Changping, Guangdong.Film is beautiful, so images from even the most basic film camera oozes more beauty and personality than a decent digital camera or phone. I suppose that while not having gear acquisition syndrome is good for my bank balance, it’s not ideal for my content production. The aperture is set via a switch on the front of the camera depicting either sunshine (f/11) or clouds (f/8).
