About this deal

I have a second cousin who made the Guinness Book of Records for brewing the world's strongest beer, and I once ran over myself with a Segway scooter. I mean, how can anyone dislike the quirky ghost of a witch who was hanged 300 years ago and is still salty about that and sometimes walks the house as a normal person and sometimes needs to hang comfortably on a rope in the tree she died in to calm herself down when things get too heated and tells you off about the comforts of the modern age? I sold my first book in 2005 and since then have published many award-winning paranormal and contemporary romances and light-hearted mysteries, including the popular Sophie Green series. However, as Josh becomes entangled in the lives of the eccentric witches, Essie finds herself drawn to him, especially after a long-held family secret is revealed.

Lite snurrig att lyssna på som ljudbok kände jag, så här i efterhand hade jag nog hellre läst den för att verkligen få med alla detaljer (för det är så mycket som händer). At the heart of the story is Essie Winterscale, a witch who yearns for a normal life but can't resist her magical powers. But then her new landlord, Josh, arrives from America, and he discovers that they haven’t paid the rent since the 1700s.

the writing was so detaching, the characters have absolutely zero personality and were just bland, the plot the author has tried to flesh out was not logical and made no sense whatsoever. That being said, even if I went into reading this totally unbiased, I still don't think I would have loved it. The secondary characters, particularly the "family" of witches living in Beldam House were fantastic fun and gave depth to the story.

Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). Essie Winterscale lives with a coven of witches in a house which changes depending on its mood and the mood of the occupants. While I enjoyed this book, I found myself more invested in the supernatural conflict than the romance between Essie and Josh. Essie Winterscale lives in a huge and ever-changing house in the village of Good Winter, in deepest, darkest Essex. The characters started to show a different side of themselves, and it made them so much more likable and easier to connect with.

So, I felt there was a lot of potential, but I couldn’t connect whatsoever with the story or the characters. Featuring hot quotes like "he struggled to keep his eyes above her collarbone", "he's sure parts of her would jiggle" and "her bosom heaved". Johnson's magical world is so vividly imagined that you'll be tempted to believe in witches and spells yourself. Is it magical realism with a monster to defeat or is it a romance between two mismatched characters? com}: Essie Winterscale lives in a huge and ever-changing house in the village of Good Winter, in deepest, darkest Essex.

Meanwhile, Josh's father is depicted as actually being super proud of him, wanted to take care of him etc. I'm so glad that in the last moments of 2022, I got to finish a 5-star read like I haven't had in a long time. Despite finding it challenging to get into at first, I enjoyed the story and would like to spend more time with the characters. The beautifully picturesque setting, in the form of a rural British village definitely served as a bit of a palate cleanser to all the small town, US based witchy books I’ve been reading lately. The house does a lot of different things depending on what is required – it can grow extra rooms or provide an escape and changes with the moods of the residents. I absolutely loved the romance between Essie and Josh-their flirty banter was top tier and I loved every scene they shared.

With witches, ghosts, demons and Witchfinder Generals there is plenty of action, a touch of (spicy) romance and humour that kept me hooked all the way through. All Essie ever wanted was to have a normal life but in the end she found herself drawn back to Beldam House because she just can't stop her witchiness (although the ability to instantly chill wine is pretty awesome, even she has to admit). It's also way too long for a romance, and easily could have been cut down by about 100 pages, as the pacing is all over the place. Into this coven of chaos stumbles gorgeous, clueless Josh, their new landlord – and he's just discovered his tenants haven't paid rent since the 1700s!It reappears and instead of being "Bees or something" it is now the witchhunter man - except rotted. Most seem tied up in clauses where the rent is minimal in perpetuity and there’s also one house he can’t seem to find that doesn’t seem to have paid rent since the 1700s. Had the relationship between the couple been more fleshed out and not so back and forth (keep in mind the book takes place over a few weeks), I probably would’ve been more invested.
