The base has small holes in it, designed so that worms may enter directly from the ground to feed and accelerate the composting process, but of a size small enough to exclude rodents. The reason I bought this 330L composter was that its capacity is >3x that of our rotary composters, which fill up after around 8 weeks and well before the compost is usable.

The Johanna’s patented airflow and ventilation systems create optimum conditions for a busy eco-system of composting micro-organisms to digest waste, releasing energy as they do – hence the term hot composter. The Green Johanna "hot" composter will compost two parts cooked or uncooked food waste (including meat, fish, bones, dairy products, vegetables and fruit) to one part garden waste and produces a rich compost all year round. Standing the Green Johanna on soil or grass will allow worms and micro-organisms to migrate in and out of the compost and help break down the waste. Crafted from restructured organic waste material, this product harnesses the power of natural enzymes and abundant free carbon.
