My wife and I are both big Goonies fans, as well as fans of the Coded Chronicles series of games from The Op, so when we heard there was going to be a Goonies Coded Chronicles game we jumped at the chance to check it out. On opening the box and starting the game, you will be told to read the first entry in Mikey's booklet. I’m not sure if this is a function or defect of the overall design, but I feel like it’s worth mentioning. It’s a cooperative game for the Goonies players and the whole thing is designed for 2-5 players ages 12+ and a single adventure takes around 1-2 or so to play.
When you complete the game these marks on the back of the guide will impact your group’s final score. The Goonies: Escape With One-Eyed Willy’s Rich Stuff – A Coded Chronicles Game includes a very short Adventure Guide that you read first that introduces the Coded Chronicles system.
Last Spring, when I discovered that Funko Games was releasing a Goonies themed tabletop rpg board game, I knew it was something we had to get our hands on because Goonies and also because Funko Games is racking up a great reputation for fandom based games that are awesome tributes to their respective franchises.They can also upgrade their dice or block damage with Wish tokens, which kind of look like Martin Sheen’s silhouette. On the foam topper, you have space for larger game components like Goonie Placards, Boss Foe Placards, large-format Adventure Tiles, the Goondocks Master Screen, the Gameboard, and the Adventure Guides. Whenever the GM moves a Sand token to the bottom of the Hourglass, the Goonies may flip one Teenager card to face up again. This is the optimal scenario – a family playing an RPG-style game based around a movie that is a family favorite. You can play through the entire thing in around 3-5 hours depending on the size of your group and ability to solve the puzzles.
The fact that it’s a game based off The Goonies too just makes this game a great game and I’m so happy to be able to say that this is an actual good game even without the name branding to boost it. In the ancient time of 1985, a trailblazing film was released that captured the imaginations of many kids. Also, should enterprising GMs find the Goonies winning too easily, they have at their disposal 6 Peril cards that can make the game harder for the player characters.This makes sense to me as this game is obviously targeted at older audiences who have a fondness for The Goonies movie. The only other gripe I had was that while it was a lot of fun, there were certain moments of the game feeling way too easy for one side or the other.
