About this deal

A lot of exercise equipment and accessories are worthless either because they are meant to be used in ways that are a waste of time at best and harmful at worst, or because they are poorly designed and/or constructed, and often both. Once attached, Fat Gripz One hold to the bar firmly like a clamp, and won't compress – even if you're deadlifting extreme loads. If you do, you better be wearing steel toe shoes because your foot is about to be smashed, especially if you have small hands like I do.

Thick bar training has become increasingly popular with athletes and military personnel around the world, and lightweight, portable Fat Gripz enable them to get the benefits of an axle bar wherever they are. Fat Gripz slide over almost any standard barbell, dumbbell, chin up bar or cable attachment, or exercise machine handle instantly converting them into thick bars. As the name implies they are grips that are placed around the handles of dumbbells, barbells, machine weights, cable handles, pull-up, dip bars, etc.

If you can deadlift 150kg but your grip fails at 100kg then you have two options; straps to overcome the grip issues, or improve your grip strength. Recently, I posted an older video from last fall of me running through a deadlift medley at a strongman competition. Fat Gripz are barbell attachments that increase the grip diameter, essentially turning any solid bar into an axle bar.

The Extreme Fat Gripz are mainly made for pro athletes that already have built up some serious grip strength. I have average sized hands (the distance from my wrist to the end of my middle finger is about 7-3/4 inches) and the standard Fat Gripz were challenging enough to grip to produce a considerable burn in my forearms without being so hard I had to drop the weight on anything other than shrug bar squats and deadlifts. When I was younger I did go to a gym that had the fat bars and dumbbells but because of the discomfort and ego because your lifts do go down I did not use them. The second time I performed that workout I did chin ups first which made gripping easier on them but much harder on deadlifts.

The theory why fat gripz add value to a workout is that, once applied to a weight, they will make the weight harder to grip. The first night I used them I noticed an immediate burn in my forearms but did not experience the pain in my wrist that I normally have. It’s hard to say what the transfer would be if someone trained exclusively with the Fat Gripz (whereas I have probably trained much more with the actual axle), but I think someone capable of a 300lb deadlift with Fat Gripz on a barbell would have at least another 20-30lbs in them on an axle. They arrived swiftly, so my session yesterday was a biceps only session (I’ll post it later) which is very unlike me, but I wanted to try them out properly.
