About this deal

We supply two types of apple tree in this selection, as although some apples can be self fertile, they always benefit from having a partner around!

Supercolumn trees are self-supporting and generally don’t require any additional support unless they’re exposed to strong winds. With their simple elegant habit they are attractive, especially when seen in blossom or bedecked with fruit. When choosing where to place cordon fruit trees, it is important to consider the types and varieties of fruit trees that you have chosen. To ensure rapid establishment, cordon fruit trees are supplied bare-rooted and are approximately 1-1.Since a number can be grown in close proximity to one another, you can increase the overall yield of fruit from your garden. This dual-purpose dessert/culinary apple was introduced in the Netherlands in the 1850s and is very popular on the continent. Use your pears in the fruit bowl, for tasty desserts or even have a go at making your own sparkling Perry! It’s that time of the year again, the time to plant Bare Root Fruit trees from October to January in the UK. If that isn’t enough, these microtrees will produce normal-size apples the first year you plant them!

Prune back all straight new shoots to 3-4 leaves above the basal cluster of leaves (the group of leaves at the base of a stem). Our Column Fruit Trees were first developed for Queen Elizabeth and her children by a gardener working for the British royal family. First recorded in 1883, there is an interesting story behind the name of this well-known Scottish apple. Because they do not have major side branches, cordon trees will not crop as heavily as standard trees or fruit trees with other forms. The slender upright habit will reach 7-8’ [2 metres or so] but can be kept a little shorter with annual pruning of the main leader.Daisy May Cooper looks slimmer than ever in leggings as she steps out with her brother Charlie following marriage split and says: 'That's divorce for you!

Cordons are usually compact, single-stemmed plants, so are a good option for growing fruit in a small space. The key difference when summer pruning is to leave several shorter new shoots, about a secateur’s length (20cm/8in) or less, unpruned every year. Discovered only recently, the ancient mother tree is miraculously free from disease - a very unusual occurrence in north Wales. Partial tip-bearers may be trained as cordons, although some are more challenging to maintain than others – see FAQs below. This means pruning back the previous summer’s growth at the top of the main stem by up to one-third.

They can be grown in the same container throughout their life, after 4 years or so, re pot in to the original container after having removed some of the old soil and teased out the roots, repot with fresh compost. Save: 14% off Cordon Apple Collection (3 Trees) This Mini Orchard Cordon Collection consists of 1 x Cordon Apple 'Braeburn', 1 x Cordon Apple 'James Grieve' and 1 x Cordon Apple 'Sunset'. Spring is probably the most fun time to plant trees, but my experience is that it can be quite difficult if I don't keep up on the watering. Whichever word you use, it means a distinctive plant or plants, given a specific cultivar name and usually bred to enhance certain characteristics, such as flower or fruit size, colour, flavour or fragrance, plant size, hardiness, disease resistance, etc. This very attractive dessert apple was raised from a cross between two of our favourite British apples - James Grieve and Worcester Pearmain. This means you can enjoy a wealth of fresh, delicious fruit without sacrificing valuable real estate in your garden. Whilst minarettes and supercolumns are usually grown as free-standing trees (supported by a stake), cordons are usually grown against a wall or supported by a trellis. You may need to thin the trees the first year so the branches will support the weight of the apples.
