About this deal

Like the comments earlier, putting a bit in the tank should be ok as the castor and mineral oils will only mix in the carb just before combustion. A castor based lubricant which is primarily designed for the racing world; however its unique properties can also benefit private owners interested in high performance. Now I don't really know what the gooey stuff was but I have a very good idea and as you can imagine, certainly didn't want them to do an analysis.

The oil was developed to have a great affinity for hot internal engine surfaces and provides excellent load capabilities,” its suppliers said – “something of high importance for racing engines running at sustained peak revolutions”. Fatty acids are polarised molecules comprising an oily, hydrophobic (water-hating) head and a hydrophilic (water-loving) tail; the hydrophilic ends of castor oil molecules are adsorbed to the metal surface, leaving the oily heads protruding. We don’t really recommend it for use in modern machinery because there are more suitable modern oils available such as Castrol Power 1 Racing 10W-40 and Castrol Power 1 GPS 10W-40. I have some Marvel Mystery Oil that I used from time to time in the Diesel tank of a pressure washer water heater. On four-strokes where people use Castrol R in their crankcases I can see why they wouldn't mix, and this is where the warnings come in; but on the total-loss, burn the whole damn lot in the combustion chamber two-stroke, it seems not to matter.

I've been told that you can put a teaspoonful in the tank, but I wouldn't know if that's enough to create the beautiful smell. In hydrodynamic bearings, like crankshaft bearings, where a relatively thick layer of oil is established, this offers no benefits. Just how much seems to be an inexact science, but generally the less you can get away with the better. On the ground, progress was scarcely less momentous as the horseless carriage progressed from being a curiosity and plaything into an increasingly practical mechanism, as well as another vehicle of human endeavour and national rivalry. In the 1920s castor oil was removed from general motoring oils as mineral oil technology advanced, but its superior film strength ensured it a continued role in high performance engines.

I really can't think of any possible advantage to adding two stroke oil to a four stroke's fuel supply. Bonsoir Yves — when you raced sidecars during the 70s, yes, you would have been wise to change the oil after each race meeting or at least very frequently. It also had a tendency to settled out in the petrol tank if I left it for any length of time, so I switched back to normal 2 stroke oil. Castrol has a long and proud history developing motorcycle lubricants and has worked with bike manufacturers and racing teams to push the limits of oil technology. You might like to start with 1000:1 fuel:R ratio (20ml of R in a 20 litre fuel tank) and see how that works, adding more oil if there is insufficient effect. As a spotty youth in the 60s I used to put it in my C11G the bloke in the garage reconed we were mad to put it in with the petrol the smell was great. That way, you could turn it off to avoid needless expense, except when wanting to demonstrate the smell, and it would have no chance of affecting the main fuel system.
