About this deal

Watching the movie in this ratio (yes I did watch the movie again in full frame, you will see why in the extras area), the film feels a little claustrophobic and the stunning scenery suffers from the reframed image, there is an important moment around the 24 minute mark where the image is supposed to widen (I'll explain more in a minute), but in 4:3 the effect is lost and the framing becomes tighter and even more uncomfortable. The idea may seem familiar, and it should, as the practice was employed by Pixar for three of their high-profile animated films, beginning with A Bug's Life.

Koda's Outtakes (2:45) present Disney Feature Animation's attempt to create a series of bloopers which treat the film's characters as actors. He’s a member of the New York Film Critics Circle, the Critics Choice Association, and the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association. Among those who appear are directors Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker, producer Chuck Williams, Roy Disney, Joaquin Phoenix, Phil Collins, Tina Turner, Dave Thomas, and Rick Moranis. Some may find the dim-witted banter and heavy sprinkling of "eh"s abrasive, but for me, I found it quite entertaining, for the most part.In a very short amount of time, the film defines these three characters as wise oldest brother Sitka and his two younger siblings, half-witted but well-meaning Kenai and the jesting, hard-headed Denahi. The story carries messages about the power of friendship and community, the difficulty of losing a loved one, and the highs and lows of growing up. Less frustrating is “Koda’s Outtakes,” which features a running farting gag that’s rather amusing, and two “exciting” games: a bone puzzle obviously designed for toddlers and a question-and-answer test that allows you to find your totem.

The supporting comedy troupe of animal goofballs (essentially a smorgasboard of ethnic stereotypes and cultural clichés, from Italian-American rams to surfer-dude bears) and the embarrassing Earth Mother chants by Phil Collins further remove us from the world of the sacred past and straight into a Disney marketeer’s cubicle. The theatrical release of Brother Bear actually used two different aspect ratios during the film- starting with one ratio while Kenai is a human, and then switching to another ratio after being transformed into a bear. In a time when wooly mammoths still existed, a Native American teenager (no, he’s not Cro Magnon) anxiously awaits the initiation ceremony that will usher him into manhood.

Timeless Tales (UK Equivalent: Walt Disney's Fables) • Walt Disney Animation Collection: Classic Short Films • Have a Laugh! The sentiments expressed in the film are run-of the-mill love-thy-neighbor bromides that are great for youngsters but, considering the two-dimensional character development, will seem familiar and dull to parents. Now, brother hunts brother and Kenai's only hope for survival is to befriend his own worst enemy, a grizzly cub named Koda. A good portion of the documentary is devoted to the film's music; the songs were written by Phil Collins and originally planned to all be performed by him, too.
