About this deal

They offer a series of visual choices that guide the reader, but it is these sections that take up space and add to the volume of the book, thus decreasing the number of species accounts that it can contain. Britain’s Insects: a field guide to the insects of Great Britain and Ireland is published by Princeton University Press (on 8 June 2021). The photographs are larger than previous photo-guides on the subject and clearly chosen at angles to best demonstrate the key identification features of the species concerned. This book covers c1,700 of the 25,000 available species but they are representative of the rest and concentrates on the commoner species. It needs people on the ground with knowledge and passion, who see the hidden worlds around them and fight for what they love. These will help give an understanding of the aspects and angles needed for photography to enable an identification to species level rather than identifying as simply or Mason Wasp’ for example. I've just bought Sawflies of Europe as I find it easier to read a physical book than the pdf versions of Benson's RES handbooks. Guy Padfield, Dispar: The Online Journal of Lepidoptera "This is a delightful if demanding book, a major work in fact.

After looking into the book i decided to purchase, i already own the Birds Wild Guide book and for me it's as good as the Collins but with less on the Technical jargon but the Insect edition works both ways, it has to as there is a fine line between species, i think the book is very well laid out and easy to understand about the insects.

But I think it is likely to be kept downstairs, handy for rushing out into the garden for a quick attempt to identify a striking looking species of something or other. For each species described though there is a species distribution map, a seasonality chart and a description of size, morphology, and habitat. Enlarge the map for more detail, placemarks will act as a guide for parking at the location, route planning etc. A renowned author of insect books and a widely published photographer, he is a world authority on stick and leaf insects, with a genus and several species named after him.
