About this deal

It raises awareness, it keeps the conversation going and reminds people that things have got to change. Yes, I knew about racism and have read a lot of Black history and politics, but somehow these two people expressing their pain and shock at encountering such things made an impression. It will make you furious, it will make you angry, it will make you think, it will make you question the obvious. Parts of it are upsetting, you're given the brutal facts, but it's balanced and complimented with the Black accomplishments you likely didn't learn about in school, and the hope of the future and the progress that's already been made.

Michael Holding, one of cricket's greatest fast bowlers delivered a rousing speech during a rain delay, about racism and what Black people go through. ICYOLA devoted a part of its season finale concert to the young unarmed African Americans who have been victimized by gun violence, particularly at the hands of police. He talks about how education is important, how teaching history which is unbiased and factual and which doesn't sweep the past below the carpet, is important, and how this will help in changing people's minds and help in making our shared future better and more equal for everyone. But that fear of the possible, the imaginary, can teach us a little about the very real events that have already happened and the real fear Black people live with. Stop the killing”—over and over and over, but nowhere near the number of times African-American people have been gunned down on our sidewalks and front yards. In summary, an emotional read that should be read by everyone, especially those who think 'White Lives Matter Too". We had decided not to make any designs to mark this occasion but we have had so many requests for a design like this (from New Zealand Veterans too), that we felt honoured to oblige. On the latter point, Naomi Osaka, Thierry Henry and Usain Bolt all shine in their discussions about racism.

I haven’t saw this anywhere, is this just something people are saying or is it a specific logo being used by somewhere/charity? I didn’t know who Michael Holding was before reading this book, and I know almost nothing about cricket as a sport, but I really appreciate both his perspective and his willingness to speak out against racism and also explain why it’s so important that athletes be allowed to use their platforms to lobby for justice. It seems that half of the world is demanding that other people kneel, and they're trying to intimidate those who don't. The one small criticism of the book would be that due to the format of interviews with different athletes it did feel a bit disjointed. Having watched Mark Austin’s emotional interview with Michael Holding on SkyNews I was keen to read Why we Kneel, Now we Rise.Holding has a chapter with Makhana Ntini discussing their rejection of positive discrimination, wanting solely meritoriously awarded positions, but for me the book highlights the need, and the proven benefits, of providing mandated representation in the present day.

So, sometime in 2020, Mikey was commentating during a test match in England, and play was cancelled that day due to rain. The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as being 'alert to injustice in society, especially racism'.Now, in Why We Kneel, How We Rise, Holding shares his story together with those of some of the most iconic athletes in the world. Why We Kneel, How We Rise is powerful precisely because, even after confronting the horror on a scale that makes your blood boil, it tells us that there is still, and always will be, hope. There is so much to do to level the playing field that for the foreseeable future it has to be BLACK Lives Matter. Superb, shocking (the truth being told),thought provoking, very relevant, well written and put together the disturbing facts of the lives of black people …if we thought the abolition of slavery was the end of the torment for black folks think again . The dehumanization of people around the globe is truly heartbreaking and a lot of it has been covered up in the history that is taught in classrooms.

Through conversations with athletes such as Thierry Henry, Hope Powell, Naomi Osaka, Makhaya Ntini, and others, he shines a light on everyday racism and how history erases contributions by Black people.

An important book that throws the spotlight on racism, looking back through history as well as forward to a hopeful more enlightened future. As time goes on more and more people will join Kaepernick in respectful but visible, necessary protest. He’s honest about how some of the historical stories in this book are uncomfortable to read, and I definitely agree. But it is a point that needs to be made, again and again, that white supremacist ideology has permeated our society to such an extent that these stories and actions have got to be kept at the forefront of our consciousness. Hope Powell discusses doubting if her job offer was purely a box-ticking exercise, and whether to accept it if it was.
