About this deal

Cats don’t have in-built conflict resolution strategies, so they much prefer to hide from their problems. A semi-random collection of photos and drawings of cats in boxes would have more interesting, in fact. The writing is mostly rhyme and repetition, with wonderful rhythmic quality and wittiness in dialogue. The story is presented with poems about lots of cats from various countries along with a cat who just hides in a box.

You will receive your files in PDF format which can be read on a variety of devices that accept PDFs, please check that your intended device can accept PDFs before purchasing. I believe for the very young cat lover it will be funny as well as an education tool to learn the names of different places around the globe (avoid the audio book with a singing version: it is annoying). Not only does the new item smell different, but your cat is also curious to see what the purpose of the new item is in their home. And cats like boxes because they help to reduce stress and offer a safe zone where your cat can observe and not be seen.Lots of cats all around the world do exciting things like fly aeroplanes or play the violin – but my cat, an ordinary round-the-house cat, likes to hide in boxes.

Readers do not get an insight on who is narrating the story, but we do not know that they own the cat. She introduces extravagant characters, while not falling into the trap of representing any negative stereotypes. There are fun rhymes with each cat introduced such as “The cat from Norway got stuck in a doorway” and “The cat from Spain flew into an airplane”.It comes as no surprise that, as a child, she adored Dr Seuss because of his 'crazy sounds and the fact that he took such liberties with the English language. We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present.

The message is lovely - other people (cats, sure) may be glamorous and able to do exciting things, but just plain and ordinary is perfect. Amelie loves to play a memory game where we read the first part of the sentence: ‘The cat from France …’ and she says: ‘… liked to sing and dance.I’d probably teach this book to pre-K-1st grade students as they can enjoy a simple cat book while learning about other countries and rhyming words.
