About this deal

This incredibly moving story weaves together one family's story and shows the sense of hope and love that can be found through adventure even when things don't go according to plan. The reason for 3 stars is I found the first and last thirds enjoyable but the middle 100 pages ish I found repetitive in their descriptions and sometimes lost where we were, how he got there, where the car suddenly appears from, even which year it is. It’s exciting to read of bravery and fortitude but for it to be told with such humility and optimism, is truly inspiring. Informative, humorous and emotional, it left me feeling sad but also really inspired and motivated to tackle my own adventure, what ever the size! For those not familiar this is a radio broadcast of weather conditions for those on the sea but has become over time a rather calming British institution that people listen to even if they aren't near the sea.

At the beginning of this adventure Toby didn’t know that he would die before he completed it, but the death of his brother and having a life limiting condition drove him to grab life by the proverbial horns. Many reviews will speak about this being a moving story, which it is, but firstly this is a book about an amazing adventure and an amazing man. Toby was lucky enough to see incredible places and even though you can *feel* what it was like to be on the kayak, it also feels like you're kayaking in a void. The authors’ light touch when describing his heath problems don’t hide the fact that this is also a very sad tale, but one in which hope and joy shine through. Moderate Becoming Good Later is the remarkable story of two remarkable people, Toby Karr and his sister Katie. Throughout, Katie Carr has imbued Toby’s account with a natural charm, which combined with sublimely evocative descriptions, effortlessly transports the reader deep into the maritime environment. Sounds like he had an amazing ability to connect with people where ever he was and bring them into his challenge. The adventure continues on to the Faroe Islands, Norway, Denmark, Germany, France and Spain, he faces dangerous seas often and instead of backing down or taking risks he uses a sensible head and constantly makes the right decisions, an incredible ability to read the sea.

From the wildness and the peace of the sea, looking back at the land, Toby hoped to gain the strength and balance he knew nature could provide and to discover the things that anchor us to each other. On a journey that took him to stormiest and most tranquil stretches of our seas, he found stories behind the familiar names and imagined environments of the well-loved BBC broadcast. The remarkable variety of those coastal areas and challenges faced to traverse them, have been beautifully distilled. It’s a book I will keep on my bookshelf and remember and refer to when visiting some of the places in the future. Toby Carr, knowing he’s got a life-limiting condition, sets out to do something a completely healthy person would think twice about.
