About this deal

The small group began volunteering their weekends to MAD GOD , and before long it had snowballed into a crew of more than 60 artists. This Company will not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage in whatever manner, howsoever caused, resulting from your disclosure to third parties of personal information. The result is a deeply personal exploration of—and commentary on—creation, evolution, life, civilization, despair, destruction, and renewal, not to mention the artist’s own unconscious mind. The power of preservation through physical release has never been more crucial and this release is a great example.

Phil produced dozens of environments and hundreds of puppets for the project, filling notebook after notebook with thousands of detailed sketches and storyboards. The tone is set with the pre-credits opening scroll quoting a passage from Leviticus of God’s threats to humanity if they disobey his words, which include “ I will make the land desolate so that your enemies who settle it shall be appalled by it. As behind the scenes documentaries on this film attest, he was a stop-motion artist who, when it was revealed that some of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park would be created visually, essentially hung up his skeleton-dusting brush, aware that his way of life had just become extinct. One of the less visceral yet prominent and ominous images in the film is of a ticking clock, a sign that everything ends eventually and nothing lasts.

As I mentioned earlier, I have little knowledge of stop-motion, and for someone like me, “Maya Tippett’s The Making of Mad God ” was a welcome dive into this world of effects work. Instead, the narrative is driven by the visuals: we begin watching a figure being lowered into an industrial landscape dominated by an imposing tower, from which enormous turrets are firing upon him. You may not know his work by name, but you’ve seen loads of it—he’s an absolute master, who invented Go-Motion, his own version of stop-motion animation.this was made with the help and participation of countless Tippett friends, contemporaries, and contributors. was all but convinced that stop-motion animation was extinct and reluctantly pushed it to the back of his mind. However, the short interviews with Tippett on influences and inspirations and the two-part behind-the-scenes documentaries by his daughter Maya Tippet emphasise how much passion and enthusiasm was poured into the project through these brief glimpses of the crew at work. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Blending stop and go-motion with traditional puppetry, time-lapse photography, live action, and a host of other old-school cinematic illusion techniques, the film’s intricate and meticulously-weird production design references H.

A piece directed by Tippett’s daughter Maya interviews many of the key volunteers who helped him to complete the project. Before signing up for reviewing this I was warned that the film is “relentlessly bleak” (to which I responded that I could easily handle that, as I’ve been working in an office for 12 years), and I would say that the description is very accurate. Shadows are deep, but lots of atmospherics have been employed here, so don’t expect too much detail in the depths. Almost everything in this world is animated and the sheer number of creatures inhabiting the film’s world and interacting with each other is amazing. Footage of a tower, possibly the Tower of Babel, being swallowed by black clouds and a scroll with an excerpt from the Bible’s Book of Leviticus promising all manner of divine punishment set the tone for Mad God before the title drops.

This two-disc set ships in Steelbook packaging with terrific cover art, an inner print, and a promotional insert. If stop-motion animation is indeed a dying art, then Mad God is its maniacal magnum opus, Phil Tippett’s raised-fist act of resistance—nay, defiance—against the dying of the light.
