About this deal

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles.

Here to Slay is a competitive role-playing fantasy strategy card game that's all about assembling a party of Heroes and slaying monsters (and sometimes sabotaging your friends too) from the creators of Unstable Unicorns. This is the funniest part of the game, screwing over your friends and stopping them from winning the game. Instead of ‘neigh’ cards to block your opponents from playing their cards, you have challenge cards (the closest equivalent to the Unstable Unicorns method of blocking a player move) and modifier cards which can change the result of dice rolls; characters in your party each have abilities which are activated by rolling above the difficulty number next to the ability on the card – roll equal or above that number and the ability can be carried out. It’s an entertaining blend of Unstable Unicorns’ set collection and ‘take that’ elements, with some RPG style dice rolling and monster bashing thrown in. Here to Slay is a competitive role-playing fantasy strategy card game that's all about assembling a party of Heroes and slaying monsters (and sometimes sabotaging your friends too) from the creators of Unstable Unicorns. Ability text on party leaders and monsters is so small that it often goes forgotten, however, which feels like a bit of a flaw.

Players have the ability to play item cards which can either boost their own party or curse other party players giving them a negative effect, on top of this there are also modifier cards which give a positive or negative value to players roll if they had just successfully rolled to defeat a monster this card can be played to tip the odds in your favour and stop them from taking the win!In this game, you can keep a modifier card up your sleeve (or, well, in your hand) to make sure the odds always tip in your favor. From the creators of Unstable Unicorns, this brutal and adorable game takes 30-60 minutes to play and is for 2-6 players (recommended for ages 10+). However, these games are over so quickly (5-10 minutes) that if they come around we just shuffle up and restart. Modifier cards can be played on your turn or an opponent’s turn to raise or lower roll values, while challenge cards are played in response to an opponent and cause you both to roll the D6s. The base game provides 6 Party leaders, but with an additional 2 Party Leaders provided in this expansion, this raises the maximum to 8 players in a game.

The new heroes are just as cute and amusing as their original predecessors and add great new powers to your army. Those cards were the ones we had the most questions about both nights we played and it really came down to not being 100% clear on what we could and couldn’t challenge. This holiday expansion pairs with the Here to Slay, a strategic roleplaying game from the creators of Unstable Unicorns. Versus another similar card which gave a simple +3 (which is already very broken) with the same limit of 6, which was way too easy to get. It’s a straightforward game that plays well with more casual gamers, but it feels extremely chaotic and games can last for anywhere between ten minutes to an hour and a half, often just due to the luck of the draw. That said, given the choice, I’d opt to play the slightly more involved and more open Here to Slay, if only because it does give you an awful lot of options and control over what you do in each turn. The first person to successfully slay three monsters, or build a full party with six classes, wins the game!

Here to Slay is a feisty, interactive card game from the publishers that created hit card game Unstable Unicorns. It’s definitely not a ‘gamer’s game’, but for more inexperienced or younger players, it’s certainly a step up from the usual roll-and-move dullness of most mainstream board games.Thankfully, Here to Slay brings a bit more control to the proceedings, with the beautifully cute creatures here – rather than simply being put in play to fill a ‘stable’ – forming RPG-style parties and slaying oversized monsters. It is one of those games where I feel like I could easily explain to others that had not played before. What took me by surprise was that the Druid powers are activated by rolling a number less than the number stated on the card. When playing in a smaller group, we always found challenges to be in desperately short supply, so were delighted to have an extra couple to unleash on our opponents.
