About this deal

I highly recommend getting this book for young children; not only will they enjoy it but they will remember the message and carry it with them. As Wick learns more of the ways of nature and the forest from Pa Herne, he’s examined by the woodsprites.

But one day he encounters the Hobs, little people who have big hearts and they go on an adventure together, helping one another along the way. This would be a wonderful way to bring the story’s events to life in the classroom by challenging learners to get involved in their own Wildlife Watch. Harklights tells a warm story of evergreen proportions as Wick explores the world of Hobs in his pursuit of being a forest protector.

Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. This review was written by Kelly Ashley With over 20 years of education experience in both the US and the UK, Kelly Ashley currently works as an independent consultant, providing training and support for primary schools across the UK. The tensions that arise from leaving his friends behind, conquering his fears, overcoming the suspicions of certain hobs and learning the extent of Harklights’ destructive plans are what drives the story forward until the explosive climax. A great debut novel with bountiful illustrations for each important scene, illustrated by the author as well! For me, a big kid, this was just a really lovely read, we follow Wick, who is a boy in an Orphanage, who day in day out is made to box up matches and only gets fed 3 meals of porridge each day.

Therefore, when Wick is offered a chance by a tiny group of grateful Hobs, after he saves their baby, he is quick to take it. However, I found Bottletop destroying Old Ma Bogeys machine to be a little underwhelming, especially since he was being treated better than the other orphans and not filling matchboxes. In fact, as I had a proof copy, my one regret is that I did not see all the illustrations, as they are beautifully rendered in black and white. Harklights by Tim Tilley is a heartwarming Middle Grade read with an environmental message that goes straight to the readers' hearts. Like By Ash, Oak and Thorn, Harklights is a meaningful story of love, family, nature and possibilities. What didn't work for me was that Wick seemed to become part of the Hob's community within days, and it felt too quick.

I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly! While our focus is on the narrator’s hopes and fears, behind them all is a tale of despoilation, exploitation and cruelty fully relevant in our contemporary world which will resonate even with the most innocent young reader. Characters: Wick is our narrator, named after an item in the headmistress's desk, just like all the other orphans. Miss Boggett breaks down each youngster’s sense of self by destroying their identies and names, subjecting them to terrible physical and psychological cruelty, denying them the food and creature comforts she herself enjoys. This is a charming tale for children, which may just help to open their eyes to the wonders of the natural world (although you can't beat taking them out in it either). You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. It seems that Ma Bogey is something to do with the Monster that lurks in their nightmares and history, that they will not reveal to Nissa or the other Hob youngsters.

When the story started nearing it's end, I still didn't feel connected to the Hobs because we'd been there for so little time, yet Wick acted as if he'd been there for months. I think children's literature befits from reducing the speed of the plot, the number of characters and the amount of unnessecary flashy, action scenes. That's a very harsh review because, apart from those overly familiar elements, Harklights is actually fun to read and will certainly find its audience. Wick, the orphan, were forced to make matches in Harklights, the orphanage, run by the horrible, greedy lady, Old Ma Bogey. All of this is in danger when Wick finds out about the Monster that threatens the forest where the Hobs lives. With the lack of fully rounded characters and a storyline that was wrapped up a little too easily, this will be a story I quickly forget, which is a shame because it had nearly everything it needed to be great.
