About this deal

Best enjoyed sipped neat, but makes a delicious full flavoured Rum Old Fashioned, or can be used to bring full flavour and life to a rum punch / tiki style drink such as a Mai Tai. We hired Rasstar Tours and there were only 4 of us, but I had to move to the front as it's a rough road. Very complex, packing big aromas of pineapple, passion fruit and new-car leather, candied and jellied fruit, papaya, guava, lime, Seville orange, blood orange and nectarine, banana and toasted spice notes build, with prominent clove notes. This is a prime example of the robust, funky expressions to be produced at the legendary distillery. With notes of new car leather, wet earth, and oak, this traditional, honest rum embodies the essence of Jamaica's rum-making heritage—a culmination of over 260 years of tropical expertise.

In 2016 the fourth pot still joined the others: built by the South African firm TNT, it also has a capacity of 5,000 gallons. Upon arriving to the Hampden Estate we were greeted by resident peacocks and Steve who spent a long time showing us around the Estate. Gentle spice with a touch of candied lemon - once past the fruit there's so much going on with the spice and dark smokiness. After years of experimentation he achieved a breakthrough that revolutionised the manufacture of rum and eventually transformed it from a local Caribbean beverage into an internationally consumed spirit.Pass the remains of an old sugar factory and come to an avenue of royal palms that frame Hampden’s beautiful Great House. Palate: The spice and bananas lead: creamy banana pie with a generous dusting of ground clove and cinnamon. Molasses based, fermented for an extended amount of time in open vats, pot still distilled and aged for 8 years in ex-Bourbon casks in the tropical climate of Jamaica.

The process lasts between 8 and 15 days and takes place in the wooden vats whose slats speak of the passing of time. Despite the name here, this spirit is surprisingly elegant while possessing an undeniable intensity as well.

Renowned for their fully flavoured rums made in the same way for two centuries using its own spring water, long ferments, using wild and natural yeast strains, no added colours and no added sugars - just superbly made pot still rum with no mucking about! A high ester Hampden Estate Jamaican rum, HLCF stands for Hampden Light Continental Flavoured, one of many distillate styles made at the Hampden Estate distillery, where rum has been made since 1753. We had a long drive up to the estate, where she provided a brief history of Jamaica and how the rum making process became central to the economy. Overall Steve was amazing, the experience was great, and DH says way better than Appleton tour (I’ve never been).
