About this deal

We came up against some resistance (and to be fair if you’re a teacher in charge of fifth form productions and a group of precocious little buggers have taken your show as their own, you’d be irked) but after months of hard work and Terry’s blessing, we put it on. Ankh-Morpork changes from just a generic city in a medieval fantasy story on The Colour of Magic into a much much more living city on this novel. I've listened to Tony Robinson read the best third of the book, laughed about eleven times and chortled more. The Watch's swamp dragon, Errol, reorganises his digestive system to form a supersonic jet engine and fights the king, eventually knocking the king out of the sky with a shock wave. Terry Pratchett was the acclaimed creator of the global bestselling Discworld series, the first of which, The Colour of Magic , was published in 1983.

When Whittle showed his original design to his supervisor at Manchester University, the latter said, "Very interesting, Whittle my dear boy, but it will never work". It is British Government Policy to suggest a working party whenever an intractable problem presents itself. I started with the 23rd book in the series, Carpe Jugulum, and was perfectly fine, other than a tendency to preach the gospel of Discworld Is Flippin' Amazing And You Have To Read These Books, which I'm trying to get under control.

As my esteemed reviewer colleague Nataliya noted in her excellent review, the best part of Pratchett’s writing is that he depicts realistic human failings in a comic setting that softens the blow of the all too real criticism in a playful way. Vimes begins investigating the dragon's appearances, which leads to an acquaintance with Sybil Ramkin, a breeder of swamp dragons. The Wikipedia recognized origin is as follows: In 1887, British Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil appointed his nephew Arthur James Balfour as Minister for Ireland.

He also skewers the masses’ tendency to blindly accept whoever has the biggest gun (or fire breathing talent). Once again, there were numerous quotes I had to highlight in this book and as soon as I have the paperback (I read the audio version), I shall add even more.Like Monty Python, Pratchett specializes in absurdity, in mocking our perceptions, definitions and expectation. Carrot, even as a new recruit, is already interesting with his idealistic-conquering-realistic theme jokes. Just bear in mind that I'm first in line if Captain Vimes becomes available, so keep your inevitable crush on him to yourself. It wasn't by eliminating the impossible that you got at the truth, however improbable; it was by the much harder process of eliminating the possibilities. a stage play for the amateur stage scripted by Stephen Briggs (1993) (script later published in book form 1997).

I have to admit this is my misconception of what Pratchett was doing with the Discworld series (after the first few straightforward fantasy parody books). I already knew I loved his books, but the mix of satire, engaging plots and an eclectic mix of characters made my heart sing. Vimes confronts his old schoolmate, the Patrician's Secretary Lupine Wonse, having figured out that he is the Supreme Grand Master, and responsible for the dragon's appearance. Excepto para la Guardia Nocturna, que se ha visto reducida a tres hombres: el capitán Sam Vimes, el sargento Colon y el cabo Nobby Nobbs. Terry's latest book, Nation, a non-Discworld standalone YA novel was published in October of 2008 and was an instant New York Times and London Times bestseller. There were many highlights in this one: the dragons, the Librarian (of course🦧), the attempts at law enforcement, and my two favourite characters: the excellent Lady Ramkin and Carrot, whose letters home were a particular delight. Wonse falls to his death after the very literal Carrot hits him with a thrown copy of Laws and Ordinances of Ankh-Morpork. A (very) small bunch of misfits (initially 3), led by a man that's given up on life and then joined by a (wonderfully) literal 2 metre tall dwarf (who kept bumping his head in the dwarf mines). On the one hand 'whittle' simply means something reduced in size (usually by means of slicing bits and pieces off it), while on the other hand Sir Frank Whittle was the inventor of the modern aircraft jet engine. A MUST read for Discword fans and would actually be a great introduction to the series for any reader.

I have always liked them but there are just so many books in the world and you know how it is, one thing led to another and somehow they didn't lead back to Sir Terry. Pratchett's description of her as a -ahem - full figured woman with enough self assurance to float a warship was a joy to read. His novels have been widely adapted for stage and screen, and he was the winner of multiple prizes, including the Carnegie Medal. One of the best-known contemporary examples can be found in Tolkien's The Hobbit, where Bard kills the dragon Smaug with a special black arrow. The story follows a plot by a secret brotherhood, the Unique and Supreme Lodge of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night, to overthrow the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork and install a puppet king, under the control of the Supreme Grand Master (Vetinari's secretary, Lupine Wonse). This striking paperback edition of the first book in Terry Pratchett’s City Watch series features artwork by Leo Nickolls with elements of Paul Kidby’s iconic cover artwork. If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.
