About this deal

It doesn’t shy away from difficult questions, but you will feel nurtured and much better prepared by the end.

The authors offer the trainee and novice helper a rich overview of the role, purpose and value of counselling skills in contemporary helping roles. One of those does what it says on the tin kind of text books; good overall introduction to counselling written in an accessible fashion and is highly interactive as it engages the student in written exercises as it goes along. It is, as the name suggests, designed as a companion to those taking their first steps into counselling. The authors do not shy away from the significant themes and controversies and the role of identity, race, culture, power and oppression in counselling practice and training. It is important for anyone in the counselling profession to be alert to issues of power and anti-oppressive practice throughout their career. First Steps in Counselling continues to evolve in this fifth edition, ensuring that it remains the essential introduction to counselling and ‘counselling-informed helping’ for the 2020s. ELCs provide a financial contribution towards a first full Level 3 qualification (Certificates and Diplomas), a first Foundation Degree, a first full undergraduate degree or national equivalents. In his highly acclaimed accessible style, Sanders covers all relevant areas of training at this level - theory, personal development and building helping skills.

A great counselling reference guide to have on your shelf that does not shirk the big issues or contradictions. He has written, co-written and edited numerous books, chapters and papers on many aspects of counselling, psychotherapy and mental health. It is therefore great to see an introductory text that examines these topics and invites the reader to explore their own relationship with them. It's also my first book on the topic as I am starting my training next month and I will definitely refer back to it if needed.

It contains all the basics that are helpful to know before starting the course and makes a great reference book. As Sanders explains, counselling is a multi-faceted animal and attitudes towards it and indeed its applications continue to develop. We will contact you when this course becomes available, we would also love to keep you informed of other/similar courses you may be interested in. The qualification you have chosen to study is part of the Legal Entitlements list and you are aged 19-23 at the start of your course and you do not already have a qualification at Level 3 or higher. Primarily aimed at those who are interested in knowing more about counselling and acquiring basic counselling skills, First steps in Counselling will also be valuable to those already working in the area. He practised as a counsellor, educator and clinical supervisor for more than 30 years, and published widely on many aspects of counselling, psychotherapy and mental health, as well as co-founding PCCS Books in 1993.
