About this deal

I have a question to the readers of this book: did you fantasize six million ways of getting rid of shameless slut Erica by giving her slow and the most torturous death and keep thinking to hire John Wick for his impressive knife throwing skills? A portion of the book takes place in Colorado and I’m about 40 miles away from one of the mentioned towns. Manipulative and opportunistic, she uses people to get what she wants (money, generally – she’s even sold her baby son off to the highest bidder). I raced through The End of Her, as I was keen to see what would eventuate on each new chapter and paragraph.

A heavy-set man in a suit whom Hanna recognizes as the real estate agent is in the driveway talking to a woman. What makes this story special is that there are three grifts occurring simultaneously, each equally frustrating and appalling. People who knew she was expecting twins – she hadn’t made a secret of it – had joked with her about how much more difficult twins would be.

The plot is moved along by Erica, a woman who Patrick had an affair with at the time of his first wife’s death, that may or may not know more details about this death and Patrick whose arrival in town brings all of this to light. All the OSes are essentially connected to a server, probably connected to a supercomputer (I could only think of that as the way such a sophisticated software can be processed), and Samantha has just been communicating with other versions of herself (within the devices of other people). The twins are still buckled, squirming, into their double stroller; it's the easiest way to contain them. First-time novelist Lapena’s writing is spare and tense, and it makes The Couple Next Door a compulsive read. Instead of going to the police with this threat, the couple decides to fight back by engaging in a Who's the Bigger Liar contest with the blackmailer. This becomes a key point in the book because Patrick’s new wife, Stephanie, becomes fearful she might have married and had twins with a murderer and wants to know the truth for her own safety. Her story telling is so strong and so are her characters that I just expect that to carry through till the end but it just seems to lose a little power going into the ending. Her story and what she was going through, both with her baby girls and with Patrick’s investigation, felt real and drew me into the story. While Stephanie struggles with the disorienting effects of sleep deprivation, there's one thing she knows for certain - she has everything she ever wanted. As her reality slowly distorts, she has to gather the pieces of her life to find the truth to protect her family.
