Generally speaking pole mounted dovecotes have just enough overhang to keep the rain water that lands on the roof away from the sides of the dovecote; which is quite fortunate as I have yet to see a pole mounted dovecote with rain gutters.

Ideally you should situate your Dovecote Nest box so that the hole faces north north-east away from the prevailing weather conditions. There is no doubt that building something yourself can be very rewarding, this is no less so than in the construction of your own dovecote.Wether it be a home, external project or commercial project, these brick slips have been designed to work with all property types from high-end minimalistic designs to country homes. Some dovecotes that I have seen have a shaped wooden strip on the ridge and provided the wood has been well protected this method should last for many years. g. if you cannot accommodate a 12'' cube as a compartment size then I would recommend 9'' x 15'' x 12'' high as a good alternative compartment size that is suitable for all types of doves.
