Generally speaking pole mounted dovecotes have just enough overhang to keep the rain water that lands on the roof away from the sides of the dovecote; which is quite fortunate as I have yet to see a pole mounted dovecote with rain gutters.

Ideally you should situate your Dovecote Nest box so that the hole faces north north-east away from the prevailing weather conditions.
