About this deal

One of the consolations after David Bowie left us was hearing all of these great stories about how immensely curious he was. You either have to choose one and discard the other, or both of your hands are full, and you’re not so easily mobile anymore. That’s when you don’t know how to start, and so the blank page (or canvas or whatever) just stares at you, daring to mar its unsullied perfection. Anyone who identifies as creative (though, in my humble opinion, I think we all should embrace this title! This book is also focused on the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, so for those looking to study another system look elsewhere.

Even three of my decks (the Life Line Lenoracle, the Color Outside the Line edition of the Life Line Tarot, and the Seaborn Kipper) all include reflective questions in the guidebook that can serve as writing prompts to help you make the most of your decks when you aren’t trying to divine the future. I can see myself gifting this book to my smart and creative friends who are curious about using tarot as a tool for inspiration and guidance in their projects. So while I love using tarot for inspiring characters and stories, you can use tarot for more than writing.

There is a long history of writing about chance and synchronicity that has nothing to do with the gods meddling in our realm.Just because we may have different takes on a card doesn’t mean that I can’t learn from your interpretations, and I hope you can learn something from mine.

And it can be; some people use it that way, just as they use curds of cheese or shapes of clouds to predict the future. After noticing the way the cards hook into your intuition and imagination, I realized that they could easily be used to assist in the creative process. At the end of every chapter Crispin lists “Recommended Materials” that are selected to give the reader a different way to think about the card. That’s the beauty of learning ways of reading tarot beyond relying on the basics of the Rider/Smith-Waite Tarot and its familiar imagery.I have a feeling some creative types will balk at the notion of being a conduit for a muse instead of a godlike, ex nihilo creator. Waite's beliefs, which Crispin includes in the chapter entitled, A History of the Tarot, were: "Waite believed that the magical systems (tarot) of the Golden Dawn and other systems were not about imposing your will on a situation. Crispin is the founder and editor at Bookslut and author of the well-received Dead Ladies Project— can make all the difference in how work is received. Personal taste first: this book seems very largely written in the imperative voice ('you should do this', 'this is what X means') which I think could be very harmful to someone who feels unsure about their creative work. I also liked this blurb about the Tower: “Remember that scene in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, where Amy throws Jo’s stories into the fire?

A hip, accessible, and practical guide for artists and creative people looking to tarot for guidance and inspiration in the tradition of The Secret Language of Birthdays and Steal Like an Artist . If we’re supposed to interpret the images and use our intuition to guide us, all on our own, then why does the Ten of Swords have the same meaning from deck to deck? To me, this implies heavily that for the sake of her art, Mann couldn’t/shouldn't worry about pedophiles seeing and reacting to pictures of her children. News from Nowhere will not obtain personal information from other organisations, and will not share, pass on or sell personal information that we hold about individuals to anyone else.As a tarot reader, the book provides insight clearly that you might spend weeks, months, or even years to come up with on your own. I loved that Crispin gives novel, art, and film suggestions for each card so that the reader can immerse herself in the “feel” or “mood” of them. For instance, for The Hermit, she suggests Walden, by Henry David Thoreau; Gravity and Grace, by Simone Weil; and “the photography of Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore.
