The book is a quick and enjoyable romp with all the tropes one might expect in a thriller — a bromance between two buddy cops, one Argentinian and one American, lots of brutal and completely unnecessary violence (pretty much the only woman to survive more than five minutes is Eva Braun, who we meet at the age of 100), incredible bungling by the bad guys leading to their inevitable defeat, and an ending that hints at the possibility of more to come. During the investigation, Vargas realises the gravity of the case and the potential geopolitical turmoil that could be unleashed on solving the crime.

Some of the changes of points of view would have been solved if the publisher had added breaks between paragraphs. By contrast, The Counterfeit Candidate (2021) is a Nazi-themed mix of the police procedural and alternative history genres, which echoes Fatherland (1992 novel). All them were cautious not to be seen by the six CCTV cameras so they all wore plastic monkey masks. Hitler progeny later creating murder and havoc in pursuit of incriminating evidence that has more recently been stolen inadvertently by a gang of bankrobbers.
