About this deal

It would certainly help you to feel that you’d found a cool item to see it pictured instead of just a line of text telling you that it gives you +1 to attack rolls. We played with four players (the game can accommodate up to 5 and there is no GM), and ended up playing 4 scenarios which took about 5 hours total. A quick note here to let visitors know that I’m still *slowly* working my way through the blog, un-Photobucketing the various posts. A highly cooperative, highly lethal game that is way more fun and way less predictable than other board games. I recognized early on that this made it very easy for us to see what was what on the board, but I still found it disappointing. This can get frustrating when you lose the same scenario 5 times in a row, but its possible to make the game easier in a number of ways that don't ruin it as a challenge. In Castle Ravenloft Board Game, the players control Heroes who have come to Barovia to discover the secrets of Castle Ravenloft, and must work as a team to succeed in the adventures within the castle. They then draw a monster card, to represent what appears from out of the gloom and attacks, following a pre-set AI routine printed on the card, and often an encounter card representing such things as events and traps. It is more complex and challenging than I expected and my son (age 10) loved the variety of monsters and the great figures that come with the game.

The fact that you have limited, perfectly balanced resources of powers; tightly controlled magic items; superpowers that change the battlefield, etc has a terrific impact on gameplay. Gameplay tends to move pretty quickly, metagaming is transparent and acceptable ("How many hit points does the skeleton have? Each one has a race, a name and some pretty badass artwork too, but you may as well get used to thinking of them just as the classes because this is not an RPG.

Just FYI: the new aspects to Zoo Vadis (unique powers and peacocks) were added in (bolted on) by the good doctor himself. Also, the bright colour draws the eye to the model’s head where black or a dark colour would have dulled it down. We just naturally fell into a habit of not making ridiculous requests and not allowing weird interpretations.Evil lurks in the towers and dungeons of Castle Ravenloft, and only heroes of exceptional bravery can survive the horrors within. and an Encounter card can suddenly teleport one of you 6 tiles away from the rest or cause the game to completely change. Now, it’s not the entire set of models from the game, as I haven’t completed any of the hero models aside from the Dancing Dragonborn as I felt the hero models were overall sub-par.

There’s also a lot of risk-based decisions such as whether you want to reveal a new tile - and a new monster - each turn or whether you care to risk taking an encounter instead, something you're forced to do if you fail to explore.My personal distaste for co-op games is well known but Castle Ravenloft has joined the extremely small shortlist of co-ops that have become regular visitors to my gaming table: no small feat in itself. The game feels like a toolbox in a good way, not by providing you with lots of components that aren't covered by the rules, but by inviting the player to use their skill and imagination to expand the game in whatever direction they choose. The low rules weight also means that some of the gothic flavour of the game is almost inevitably lost.

Because of the monochromatic heroes and monsters, and the fairly repetitive-looking dungeon tiles, it's only a 4 in Style. If you do take it, you have the option of spending some of your hard-earned monster kills to cancel it and if you let it happen it might be a question of whether to take damage or suffer a different effect.If you come across a post where the images are messed up or blocked that you’d like to see – drop me a line in the comments there and I’ll prioritise fixing that/those ones. Each character starts at Level 1 and can conceivably reach Level 2 during play, though this is rare.
