Fine motor skills are a crucial foundation for writing and drawing but also enable increased independence for those skills we need throughout life – the ability to dress ourselves (zips and buttons), brushing teeth – and later on, better control with cookery skills like chopping and peeling. BSL is the language of the British Deaf Community and the use of BSL signs to support spoken language, known as Sign Supported English (SSE), is now widely accepted within the field of Special Educational Needs (SEN). But there is so much more to signing than being more advanced in literacy, communication and language. There’s a brilliant collection of very useful signs of common words that babies and young children might need to communicate effectively.

WCDP are working with a range of partners to develop and promote the use of sign language in Wales, in a partnership led by Bangor University. Well loved stories, in conjunction with signing, provide young children with the experience of being deeply cared about, snuggled on a special lap with a favourite book.At baby signing level the two sign language systems share around a 90% compatibility so there is no reason why you can’t love our Rhyme and Sign Adventures too. Cultural Gain a deeper understanding of the Deaf community's language, history, and values, ensuring your interactions are not only accurate but also culturally sensitive. This fantastic book cleverly uses QR codes so that you can not only see their beautifully illustrated pictures of the various useful first signs, but you can scan the QR code for the sign and watch a short You Tube clip of it! Sign language is constantly changing with sign language in Wales reflecting the local language and culture. This book was originally put together in 2015 by Janice, with the assistance of Emma Gilbert, for the former BSL Level 3-320 unit.

As you develop your understanding of British Sign Language, you also need to develop a deeper understanding of linguistics.

The BSL Baby Sign Link Book would be perfect for families of newly diagnosed deaf children as well as families of children with communication needs.
