The instruction booklet is beautifully illustrated by Sarah Keele, and is competently written, explaining the rules well enough that I had no trouble trying the game (and solo! Highly group dependent, and deeply enhanced by higher player counts, the essence of this offering is engaging on a level that similar titles routinely fail to vault.

Even when the maturing Bristol prototype was still a jumble of cheap paper and plastic, my fellow playtesters and I were having a fantastic time together. If the quality of the victory matters, your goal should be the harder task of remaining free of the plague — but the attendant prestige of a healthy win could prove tempting to those desperate to look like social deduction geniuses. So we would have liked to have seen a little more intelligent design with this game, but still think it's fun. The dice have inset faces, and are simple to read or feel, for playing in lower light conditions, or players with poor eyesight.

The Alms expansion brings a new element to the game with coins that can confer immunity or instant infection from the plague. Like Paul above, I wasn’t a fan of Tortuga either but as a Bristolian of 15 years I’m hoping for a better experience from this one. The table “real estate” of the game was also quite compact, allowing this game to (eventually) be played in public easily.

I was a little late getting my kickstarter, but I've enjoyed all the Dark City games from Facade Game. Having played Tortuga 1667 from the same designer, I came away from that thinking that the social deduction there was similarly broken.Overall, I found Bristol 1350 very playable and it has seen its turn at our table many times since we first played it, making it GeekDad Approved and worthy of a place on your bookshelf and game table!
