I read Brightstorm as part of the primary school teachers' book club on Twitter and absolutely loved it - a well-deserved five stars given and it's now up there with my favourite recent releases in children's literature. For entering this new expedition is the explorer who bore witness at their father’s hearing in the Geographical Society.Brightstorm was also selected for Independent Booksellers Book of the Season and Primary School Book Club Reads. I found the writing to be fairly clean but a tad didactic, but for the most part it was a solid story. Certaines résolutions de problèmes sont un peu simple mais il s’agit d’un roman destiné aux 9-12 ans, je pense que le scénario est parfait pour cette tranche d’âge. It is the story of twelve-year-old twins, Arthur and Maudie Brightstorm, who are left alone when their father embarks on a great sky-ship expedition across the continents to South Polaris.

This ambitious debut is set in 1896, but in an alternative history - almost steampunk - with clockwork servants, silver airships and mechanical animals. With his death and the children now orphaned, Arthur and Maudie are thrust from a life of comfort, to one of destitution. Just like us, they look out for each other, care about each other, encourage each other, and even tease each other. It was a little slow with the build up for this but it really packed a punch with how it ended up going once we were on the sky ship!Arthur and Maudie, the Brightstorm twins, must fight to clear their family name after their father goes missing on an expedition to South Polaris - but is there more to his fate than meets the eye? You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot!

The Brightstorm series is split into a trilogy (books 1 to 3 below) and a fourth book, which can also be read as a standalone. The sibling bond between Arthur and Maudie was also so cute to see, as was the growing relationship between them and other members of the crew!

I loved to see them still keeping their parents in their hearts but also finding people who will always care for them and love them. I hadn’t realised how much I was missing middle grade until now- but Brightstorm was just the book I needed to get back into it!

I used to read through a lot of these books with my kids, but we are starting to age out of the genre. So when they get the opportunity to go on an expedition south, they jump at the chance to fulfill a life long dream and maybe even find their father, or at the very least, find out the truth of what happened on that trip.But the further Gan travels, the more secrets are revealed - and the more she questions everything she believes. Arthur and Maudie are twins, their father an explorer who has died on an expedition - but they haven't been told the whole truth about what happened. Our main protagonists are obviously Arthur and Maudie, although the book is only from Arthur’s perspective. Arthur and and Maudie Brightstorm set off on an amazing adventure to South Polaris to find answers about their father’s disappearance. There is always a playmate and confidant to turn to when life is running smoothly or there are challenges to be faced.
