About this deal

I was so pleased to be approved to read this book as in the past I used to read every new Erica James book that came out.

When Naomi bumped into Ellis, a man she’d known through university, their rekindling of friendship was immediate. With thanks to HQ Digital and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The Last Year: Essays is based on that column and focuses on not only that year, the present and pressing moment, but also the past eighteen years of our lives as we looked ahead to the future.

As Grace struggles to fit in with her sisters, she forms bonds with a homeless man and a new classmate, which break her out of her shell. With descriptive prose, captivating characters and more than one intriguing secret hidden deep in Naomi’s past, Mothers and Daughters is a heartwarming and very satisfying read, that may well make you reflect on your own family relationships. Bit over the idea that women over 60 need to have someone else make their decisions for them, particularly after the death of their controlling spouse. It’s a great time to delve into novels about the complex and fascinating relationship between mothers and daughters. While the focus of Beard’s seminal essay collection Boys of My Youth does not solely focus on mothers and daughters, Beard’s mother shines in the first half of the collection. Erica James does have an uncanny knack of making the places she describes feel real, and the house was almost as much a character in the story as the human ones. But Ruth’s feelings are transformed when she reads LuLing’s memoirs of her upbringing in China around the time of the Japanese invasion and the events that brought her to America.
