About this deal

I was so shocked at how neutral the boost was that I immediatly realised I needed one at the start of my chain as well as at the end.

A booster pedal to give you a little more kick to get that needed overdrive your amp or boost your tone for a solo or simply act as an always-on booster that compliments your amp's tone. After testing the MXR Micro Amp with my pedalboard, I found that this pedal brings a little shine to the tone, so your sound will have a proper clarity. After the 12 o'clock, the MXR Micro Amp begins to bring overdrive to the amp, as the volume climbs up. Now, the original Micro Amp wasn’t perfect, but back then guitar effects were pretty rough and ready and by contrast it was classy. It improves the frequencies from the amp, so the clarity obtained let you to low the volumen knob from your guitar without losing dynamics.

This pedal allows you to gently roll out that woofiness without negating all the wonderful interaction between the guitar and the Deluxe’s preamp. When you bring the knob up around 3 o'clock it adds a little gain but not too much to colour the sound, enough to boost your tone with a little added grit. The MXR M133 Micro Amp is the perfect handy little pedal that every guitarist should make room for on their pedal board.Like you, though, I'd debate the merits of such a device on grounds that I don't see much point in trying to make different guitars sound the same. The color is very much like the original except that a little pearlescence has been mixed in for fun. If, like me, you often like to play solos on a vintage spec strat or tele into a an old-school tube amp with moderate amounts of preamp gain, a clean boost like this is an invaluable tool while recording. Recently, MXR/Dunlop has been touting the pedal as a quick fix for guitarists who switch back and forth between, say, a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson Les Paul during the course of a performance.

I used to be a dyed in the wool TS9 man (and later an 80s SD1 guy), often using them as a colored, dirty boost for solos with fender guitars (like everyone and their mother likes to), but in the 90s I got turned on to clean boosts, treble boosts and even the venerable MXR Dynacomp as ways to add gain and 'cut' (these pedals generally turn your hi-z guitar signal into a fairly low-z affair that drives the cable a lot easier which will add/preserve treble just like a buffer) for a solo sound without sacrificing the bandwidth and signature voice of my guitar. Please give us the reason for your assessment in the following text box and – if possible – your e-mail address for further questions. The original M133 exhibited a tiny bit of high frequency roll off and some frequency response non-linearity. My favourite use is after fuzz/drive, at about 11 o'clock, with the guitar volume knob rolled half way down. While the simple analogue circuit can simply be used to increase volume, it can also push valve amps into natural saturation and compression. With its Gain knob, the Micro Amp+ allows you to dial up just as much gain as the original-up to +26dB-but with added EQ controls, you can now finely sculpt your boosted signal. Of course, we’ve all become accustomed to companies “upgrading” their classic designs, only to discover that the charm of the original was somehow lost along the way.Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as an option with full kits, and can take a battery if desired with footswitch positioned 22mm higher, closer to the controls, in a 1590B.
